General query re port scans - looking at my security log (Sygate 5.0), and it's telling me someone is doing a port scan. Hit the backtrace option, and this is the result :-

    Williams Communications, Incorporated (NETBLK-WCG-BLK-1) WCG-BLK-1
    64.200.0.0 - 64.200.255.255
Williams Communication IP Services (NETBLK-WLCO-SNTCCA1INTERN-30) WLCO-SNTCCA1INTERN-30
    64.200.150.0 - 64.200.151.255

I've never heard of these people, but the same log is giving results for NTL, which is my ISP, so I'm wondering if they're all part of the same thing? Sygate is flagging it as minor severity.

Sorry if that sounds naive or paranoid, but I don't like the thought of my computer being scanned!

According to my ZoneAlarm log I get hit at least twenty or twenty-five times a day with port scans, udp and all the other "take-a- chance-someone might-be-home" fishing scans. Some come from my ISP (cable) some from retailers and some, no doubt, from evil-up-to-no-gooders. Most are automated proggies that scan the entire web looking for open ports. As long as you have a decent firewall (like ZoneaAarm) you're okay. The firewall will block the scans and, as far as the probers are concerned, you don't exist on the ports scanned. I wouldn't worry about it.
