When I'm not using my laptop, does it matter what position it is in--flat on a table or floor, or on its side or edge?

If it's not in use, it shouldn't matter. If it's in a carry case, it's position would be on it's back edge when carried and that doesn't affect it. I wouldn't put it on the floor because of the risk of kicking it or tripping on it. When my Dell Precision M70 isn't in use, I have the lid closed and it's flat on a nearby counter so I can bring it over to my work surface, open the lid and go about my business. But, that's just a matter of convenience.
