Positive thoughts needed...

I normally go into a robotic and organised mode whenever I encounter any type of problem(s) or crisis and effectively manage things while maintaining some sense of humour. But when it comes to anything that effects my little companion, (ie my cat)...then I feel helpless if I can't control or fix the problem - which is what is happening now.

So I'm reaching out to any/everyone who listens/reads to ask for positive thoughts towards my little friend who presently is seriously ill.

I've become alarmed because my cat's appetite dramatically declined to zero within these past few days, in spite of my scrutiny for trying to find a cause, my care, attention, and even following our vet's attendance, checks and medication.

Today while awaiting the vet's return to home attendance (I'm still confined to the house while recuperating from back operation), I was caressing and reassuring my very sick little friend and was horrified to discover a tick that somehow missed detection from past scrutiny. This parasite has been a contributing cause for the paralysis and sickness that has slowly been effecting my little friend.

My fear is that today is the fifth day moving towards the sixth, which is late for detection with such parasites that can prove fatal.

The vet quickly took him to the clinic for further examinations and tests, anti-tick serum, intravenous treatments and overnight observation. I won't know how my cat is faring until tomorrow morning and whether he comes home tomorrow or not for another few days, if at all.

So once again I request positive thoughts from anyone who reads this towards my little friend who has been a wonderful companion to me in his own loyal, affectionate and sweet manner.

    Cheers

    LS

Yikes! I'm sure he's in the very best of care, a.t.m. It's amazing what a strong will can do in times of ill-health.

Stay positive, and know that whatever happens, he has had a good life with you. Don't forget to look after yourself as well.

All the good thoughts and prayers to both. Take care, all. Be thinking of ya.

Truth, ticks are common around this part of the world, so I'm inclined to think he'll be OK. What do you think the problem is, some sort of allergic reaction? Other than some incredibly nasty local diseases like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (aka Yellow Fever) and Lime's disease they usually aren't too harmful, just a nuisance. When I was a kid the fever almost took my brother, lasted like 4 days running a temp around 105F (40.6), sometime a bit higher.

I am definitely a cat person, so I empathize and believe it will be OK.

Thanks for such positive thoughts, Bill.

It's tick paralysis...toxic by tick injecting poison into the host (my cat). Vet and I both missed detection of tick until swelled enough for me to feel it today when caressing cat. Vet was about to do blood tests because we thought it was some sort of poisoning, until I spotted the tick.

The tick's toxin has several effects, acting on the animal's muscles and respiratory (breathing) system. Last couple of days my cat showed weakness of the legs, slowness in walking, with a wobbly gait and losing balance/falling over; overnight he started vomiting and dry retching; then this morning before I spotted the tick he was having some difficulty in breathing.

I just hope given his age, the vet's treatment is timely and successful...can't sleep presently through worry.

Legalsuit, I'm with Lev - you and yours are in my prayers.
Just FYI, I have experience, though canine, with this illness - to my experience, it has always passed after a few hours to a few days = you'll see some lasting effects for awhile, but the critter-kids always seem to come fully out of it in time.
Best of luck, God's love, and mine, too.

Much thanks Lev, am truly grateful.

With such a diverse range of members, I knew by asking for positive thoughts, there would those such as yourself offering prayers. (Personally I've turned to Saint Francis of Assisi the patron saint of animals and St Rita of Cascia saint of the impossible).

Thank you Port-O-San ...I believe everyone's kind thoughts and the potency of prayers have contributed to latest news that my little friend is slowly fighting off the poison. First time in days he has eaten and drunk a little and breathing better, but paralysis still leaving him immobile. Hopefully he'll continue improving.:)

I agree. Being a cat owner also, I feel it is slightly impersonal to just call it a cat/pet. It should have a name. :)

For instance my cats are called Otter and Prawn. Odd yes, but it fits with their personalities.

    Hope your cat gets well.

At first, my cats were just there. In the background. But, now, I'd hate to have something happen to them.

  26. legalsuit

    legalsuit Legal Eagle

My little friend's name is Amon-Ra (pronounced "Armohn-Rah") which totally fits with his personality and looks which is a black, short haired domestic cat. He is built like an American footballer (long legs and body, thick muscular neck and broad shoulders).

I named him after a black, Egyptian, warrior prince who successfully won battles while overtaking lands - pretty much like my Amon...no cat ever set paw on our property...even disappeared inside their own places whenever he would traverse theirs (cheeky little bugger).

  27. legalsuit

    legalsuit Legal Eagle

Hey Grumbles my cat's name is Amon-Ra (pronounced "Armohn-Rah") and prior to the paralysis tick poisoning him, he was an energetic, fit, muscular and youthful 15yr black cat who ruled! (Fuller description in my earlier post to Theefool)

Have no cat photos loaded, and after what Ra has been through these past nine days, his weight went down 50% and he is looking dreadful - plus with shaved parts for intravenous and catheter placements during his treatment he's never looked so awful.

However, some good news though! He can walk (with some difficulty), so I was allowed to bring him home with a warning, that there is still a chance of a relapse due to the major stress to his body caused by the paralysis tick.

Outcome of having the tick paralysis poisoning, is that it can cause some complications within the next week that may require vet return for further treatment. So it will be a week of convalescence (ie him at one end of the couch and me at the other:p:D).

Just so glad he is now home...I can now sleep.:)

Once again, thank you for your wonderful support <double hugs>:)

I just wanted to post a big Thank You! to everyone here for your wonderful words of support, your kind thoughts, special vibes, energies and special prayers towards my little friend Amon-Ra.

My Ra is now home, very weak, 50% weight loss, breathes easier but struggles to walk. Because the paralysis tick poisoning caused major stress to his body, there is still risk of a relapse within the next seven days. So he'll be sharing my couch where I can keep an eye on him while he convalesces with me:)

Once again, Thank You! one and all.

    Cheers

I'm glad to hear it's looking up. I bet he's getting the good stuff, when we have tuna fish the cat gets the drain off (the oil is good for them). I've heard some people claim cats don't love, they don't know what their talking about. To misquote Heinlein, cats are hilarious, but you can't laugh at them.

My boy loves our cat a lot, but I suspect the cat doesn't think so. He just bought a collar with a bell, I'm waiting to see where this goes.

Hi there Queen and welcome to the MG's Forum!

Thanks for your post! Gave my cat an extra hug for you...he has been to Hell and back with that paralysis tick poisoning, so I guess you're right in saying cats can be "...OK somehow" - though mortality rate when cats/dogs encounter these ticks unless caught in time are high . He's been lucky so far.

BTW, Love the name of your cat "Jynx".

Thanks LauraR...Amon-Ra is resting a lot, still weak, a little better to yesterday, but obviously happy (as I am) to be home.:)

Thanks Darlene. I was feeling anxious whenever I phoned for vet updates. It was touch and go with Ra because he was in the last stages of the paralysis tick's poisoning effects. I reckon everyone's support, thoughts and prayers here along with my other friends' have helped to bring him home to me.:)

The vet and I were so surprised to discover it was paralysis tick poisoning. I kept overlooking it when researching his symptoms, because I didn't consider we have possums in our area (who can be tick carriers). So lucky I discovered that tick in time, because mortality rate is high following the last stages of tick poisoning.

Thanks gal1998...yes, recuperation will take a while, the tick's toxins take a while to clear, which is evident from Amon's current state...and we're both resting better now...less stress:) Thanks again for your support, so much appreciated.:wave

    Cheers

Amun, god of life. Ra, god of the sun... merged together into one in the god Amun-Ra. With such illustrious names, how can he not get better? Just in case though, I have asked my own feline friend to petition Bast on your friend's behalf, and ask that she blesses him with a swift recovery and protects him from poison relapses. The feline in question has agreed to do it mainly because she can't bear the thought of another cat passing away in such an undignified manner. There is no glory in tick poisoning. ;)

On a more serious note, I am so glad to hear your cat is feeling better. It hurts when they are sick and you have to give your beloved friend over to someone else and trust that a stranger can take care of them and care about them... I have been following the thread and been too nervous to post for fear of jinxing things, and I am soooo glad to hear he's back with you. Just being with a person he knows and trusts is going to make a big difference for him. Cats are, regardless of what stupid dog people may have told you, very social and affectionate, and they grow genuinely miserable without their family. Just being with you and receive tangible proof that he is loved and safe will help him. So just keep spoiling the prince, it's good for him.

Loved your post Mimsy, and from memory, I once noted that your little friend (Casey) was the female feline twin version to my own Ra...beautiful cat. Thank her for her request to Bast. (Had to smile at this, because I happen to have an Egyptian statue of Bast sitting on my bedside table overlooking Amon-Ra while he sleeps...incredible but true coincidence.)

I don't believe you could possibly have jinxed anything...your thoughts are always positive.:) So once again, thank you for your post.

And yes, the vet knew Ra would have been happier resting with my sharp eyes on him, so he was released that little bit sooner given he managed to walk, eat/drink and toilet by himself (even if with some difficulty).

Ra is still quite weak, sleeps a lot and struggles to walk, but at least his breathing is good and is happy to be home. I just need to ensure I follow vet's instruction and watch out for any relapse.

Once again, thank you for your thoughtful post.:wave

Glad Ra is progressing along okay, L.S. He'll definitely heal faster at home, surrounded by your love, and of course you will sleep a lot better, now.

Talking of coincidences, my friend’s Doberman is recovering from a form of Tick Paralysis, too. His name is Anubis. The connection (sort of), Anubis with Bast, as follows.

I seem to remember something similar, yes. :) Casey, is sleek, pure black, and very regal, so if she had been born in ancient Egypt she would have been among the cats worshipped as divine children of Bast. She is well aware of this fact, and makes sure that we never forget it.

(Personally, I think all cats remember the time when they were worshipped as gods, and I think they are plotting together to return to those days. Casey, fortunately seems content to be worshipped by her immediate group of humans, and has shown no interested in expanding her horizons. Then again, that could just be a spell she has put on me, to keep me from interfering.)

Amon-Ra will probably sleep a lot in the next week or so... which is good for him. It sounds like a good thing that he can eat and take care of himself entirely without help, and the fact that he can bathe and groom his fur is a good sign. It is a very sick cat that stops caring for his appearance, and that would have been a bad sign. Keep us posted on how he's doing. :)

LOLWhat you've noted of your beautiful Casey's attitude is so spot on, which further leads me to think she must be the long lost twin sister of my Ra.:p (Special hug to your Casey.)

Ra is very slow with recovery...he can only groom himself with his paw, any other method and he falls/rolls over in the attempt. Small appetite and still gulps when swallowing, his meow/vocals still sounds strange and unsteady when walks - only a few steps at a time with difficulty, then lays down to rest - so he is still trying to rid himself of the toxins.

At least he is on the road to recovery, which I am soooo grateful for.:)

Thanks Cat! I still reckon my Ra's recovery has a lot to do with the support from here and my other friends!:)

Thanks Phantom Amon-Ra is slowly getting there. As for your friend's dog's name of Anubis, the Egyptian name link is a coincidence.

The "Paralysis Tick" (Ixodes holocyclus) is the most dangerous tick for dogs/cats - humans can also be effected, (the type my Ra had). If Anubis has been effected by this particular tick, I hope your friend has seen a vet. This tick causes paralysis in a variety of forms, typically starts with weakness of the hindquarters that progresses to total paralysis of all four legs. Other early signs include a change in bark or meow, dry retching and vomiting. When the chest muscles and muscles of the throat become affected, the dog or cat is in serious trouble (this occurs in later stages, mainly noted by animal gagging when trying to swallow - which is stage my Ra reached).

When a Paralysis Tick affects a pet, the pet often dies.

If you're friend's dog has been through the vet's treatment process and now recovering, I hope he is ensuring the dog is kept quite (no exercise, stress, excitement) and daily tick checks for the next 7-10 days. I wish Anubis a good recovery.:) Your friend should also seek some preventive measures like Advantix (toxic for cats), or Permoxin or Frontline

As for my Ra, he's confined for now, and in a week I'll be adding an anti-tick protection product as a future preventive measure.

    Cheers

    LS
