Possessed Pointer Issue

Had been trying to fix and old and intermittent issue with freezes on my laptop last week. Ran Chkdsk-R and Tweaking and it seem to be functioning better for a few days, though it did freeze once more. That's no longer the biggest problem, though I'd like to get back to that once the new issue is resolved. A few days later, I began noticing my pointer sometimes jumping oddly, even when the PC was idle. It jumped and sometimes selected icons on the desktop or clicked on menus or other items within a program, including Firefox, Chrome, Cortana, Word, Excel, Civ VI, Task Manager, etc. After a while the problem seemed to disappear, only to come back later. Several times the pointer has begun to stutter uncontrollably at the top of the screen and can no longer be manipulated. In these cases, I've typically had to use the power button to restart and this seems to reset the pointer for a while. Or it may go away after 10 minutes or so. I've found that the problem occurs even in safe mode and with a clean boot. It's like my PC has seizures. Had one while trying to post this. Problem occurs with our without touchpad activated and with or without my external wireless mouse plugged in. I've checked Mouse and Touchpad drivers with both the built-in check and Driver Booster 5 and they (and everything else) appear to be up to date. Malware scan also came back clean. Tried external Mouse on a different PC and no problem. Tried a different external Mouse on this PC, and the problem occurred again. Not sure if this is software or hardware issue, but hoping it can be fixed easily.
System is a Dell Inspiron 17- 7778, with an I7-6500U Core, running Windows 10.0.16299

Hummm....unplug your router and see if it continues.

Yes, the pointer was having a severe stuttering episode as described before. I turned off the router and the problem persisted. I plugged back in the router after a few minutes. After about two more minutes, the problem suddenly ended. Before this, I also tried disconnecting from the router while the system was not having a problem and nothing happened. But of course nothing was happening at that point. The system went more than 24 with substantial use between Wednesday and tonight without having a recurrence until a few hours ago.

Just out of curiosity, is someone using another computer in the house with a wireless mouse?

On and off they have been. But the problem has occurred when no one was using another system and when both mice were disabled. Also, we've been using the two systems in question with these same mice for some time since at least Sept. 2016, but this specific issue only appeared for the first time on Dec. 13.

The other issue I mentioned with freezes has been occurring irregularly since the first week I booted up this system. Updating drivers with Driver Booster seem to solve the issue in January 2017, but it began recurring again in November 2017 and has happened intermittently since that time, with the most recent instance being Dec. 9.

Good point. I ran the prerequisite scans and both RogueKiller and Hitman found some issues, so that may well be the problem. Just posted a new thread over at the Malware forum. Unless they come back and tell me it's nothing that should cause this problem, I guess this thread is done for now.

OK. TimW gave my scan logs a good once over on the MalWare forum and it doesn't seem to be MalWare. Welcoming alternative suggestions. Here's the thread on that forum if anyone is interested or wants to take a look at those scan logs: https://forums.majorgeeks.com/threads/pointer-seizures-system-freeze-ups.317766/#post-2005196

One thing I didn't emphasize originally was that this "seizure" issue even came up during a restart. Any chance it could be a firmware? Also wondering about system file corruption or a hard drive error. During one of the big Windows updates a few weeks back, my system did lock up and had to be rebooted to complete the install. Didn't have much option, but wonder if that may be related to return of the freezes and the new problem of pointer seizures.

If you had to reboot during an update, that could cause issues. Update for (KB2504637) ..... maybe uninstall the update and try a new download.

OK. I think I did this before once in an older version of Windows, but I'm wary of making things worse if I get it wrong. Can you get me started on how to uninstall this update in Windows 10? Thanks.

Oh, that is what I thought I was supposed to do. It's not letting me see KB2504637. I can see KB4054022, but it's not letting me uninstall that. I can uninstall any of the other updates there (Security, Visual C++, etc.) but not that one.

Then I can only suggest you do a system restore to before the update.

So, this is strange. I thought I had created restore points several times, but Windows can't find any of them. What's more, I attempted a reset, both with files and without, and the process gets to about 40 percent complete and then says that there was a problem and it could not be completed. I also attempted a Refresh and had the same result. Am I out of luck with this?

OK, that worked. Or at least it did complete the installation. The pointer weirdness popped up a few times during the installation, but so far hasn't come up since the system fully booted into Windows. And no freezes so far either, but I haven't given it much time yet. I'll post again if there's a recurrence. Thanks!

Ok, the pointer issues returned without much waiting. I'm trying an experiment that I'm hoping will cure the issue. I had forgotten that there's another input device on this system besides my Keyboard, Mouse and Touchpad, but I just never use it. And that's the touch screen. The problem looks an awful lot like the touchscreen is sending false signals to the system, pulling the pointer to the upper left or center part of the screen and then wobbling there for a while before it subsides. To test this I've disabled the touch screen. If it happens again, I'll repost to see if there's anything else at all I could try.
