Possible hard drive problem

I say possible because I've never had anything like this happen before.

The other day I was prompted to run chkdsk on my thumb drive, which has happened before, and I wasn't worried because it gets pretty heavy use so fragmented files are fairly regular. Well, apparently the computer took it upon itself to also run chkdsk on my PC's hard drive and it found a few corrupted files.

The next day I am repeatedly prompted with messages saying various files are corrupt and have become unreadable and it makes me run chkdsk again. This time, however, it finds an enormous list of files which are corrupted. Now I'm stuck running chkdsk on a seemingly infinite loop.

We recently had a computer which was the same model and purchased at the same time die due to hard drive failure so I'm wondering if I have a similar fate to look forward to in this machine or if it's something relatively harmless I've missed.

I regularly update anti virus and spyware and run scans and haven't found anything in years so I have trouble believing it is a virus unless it's a particularly terrible virus very recently contracted.

I may have screamed infinite loop a bit too soon, it finally got past chkdsk and started up but it ran it a few times in a row.

You sure it was as a result of a Virus and not Bad Sectors?
