possible hardware issue?

My PC shuts down / reboots whilst playing games. When it happens the screen blacks out, the speakers buzz for a second or 2 then it restarts. I suspect its a heat or hardware issue. I installed speedfan and just after booting I get the temps as 63 CPU, 60 Aux, 40 Core, 40 HDO. They soon settle to 58,57,37,37.

    The spec is
    ALIVEXFIRE-ESATA R3.0 Mobo
    AM2 x2 6000 CPU
    SAPPHIRE HD 4770 512MB GPU
    2 x 2gb ddr2 667 ram
    2 x 1gb ddr2 667 ram
    200gb sata2 HD
    onboard sound
    650 watt PSU

all running on XP pro. Was previoously on 7 with a 8800gt GPU but kept having major isues then the mobo packed in followed by GPU. Couldnt get 7 to reinstall and run right with new GPU. Not ideal I know as the ram seems wasted for now.
Does this sound like its running warm?
What fan is reccomended? would something like a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ be ok? Ive got the side case of my tower to try and help but its made only 1 degree difference.

Just ran a quick test, cant run a game longer than 5 mins. But just ran Mafia 2 for 5 mins. Mostly jutst loading videos etc then 1 minute of gameplay. CPU went up to 75 and aux temp went to 72, the core went to 47. Seems a dramatic increase for 5 minutes gaming. What temps should I be aiming for?

Les than 75C:-D That's pretty warm,I've had a quick look around and it appears that most AM2 users run them around 60-65 under full load or slighty less, the thing is if your alt tabbing out of the game to check your temps the CPU will already of cooled down maybe 10-20 degree's so the actual temp it reaches will be much higher.

While monitoring temperatures run a CPU stress test, this will isolate the CPU and hopefully it will crash.

Run prime 95's torture test and write down your temps, include with your next post, also start task manager, performance, and make sure your CPU is at 100%.

Ran stress test, done maximum heat test and blend test. Most it got to
    system 41
    CPU 92
    Aux 87
    HDO 39
    Core 80

All seems very warm to me.

Forgot to mention, speedfan shows 2 fan speeds, CPU0 which doesnt go above 2250 rpm and Fan2 which got to 3407. guessing they are the CPU and the GPU fans? Surely they should be getting a bit higher?

Holy Hell! :-D Stop running stress test's for a while your CPU is @92C,there's something seriously wrong with your cooling, take the side of your case off and make sure your CPU fan is running, use some basic apps just to warm the CPU up and make sure your CPU fan spins up,you will audibly hear the tone change.

Did you install the CPU yourself? There maybe something wrong with CPU thermal interface material, feel the side of the CPU heatsink while its running it should be red hot if its not your need to reinstall the CPU and heatsink.

EDIT is this an old computer? Make sure the CPU heatsink is clear of dust while you have the side off the case, clean all the fan grills, this is actually the first step you should take my apologies I automatically assumed you would have cleaned it already.

heatsink is hot, I changed the paste a few days ago but made no difference. The side is off but makes very little difference. Ive just tried changing the fan speed manually on the GPU and even at flat out theres only a few degree difference. Not worried about that temp though as the catalyst control center shows that as 10-12 degrees less than speedfan. Although speedfan is the same as bios readings on the CPU.
Do you think that fan I mentioned is a decent one? The one I have in came bundled with the CPU and is just a basic heatsink with fan on top.

The thing is the basic heatsink on the CPU won't let it get to 92C,in stock form with the side of the case off it shouldn't really be any higher than 60C so something is going wrong,as I said in my previous post you need to check your fan is spinning up to full speed if it is you would know it sounds like a jet engine, stick with the CPU temp for the time being then move to the GPU once you have it diagnosed.

Speedfan may let you adjust your CPU fan speed to observe the temperature change but I have had mixed results.

The 212 is a decent cooler.

Quick update, fitted the 212+ cooler with arctic 5 paste, now full load stress test tops out at 47 degrees :-D
