Possible processor/WinXP Speed problem

    My setup:
    Q6600 Quad core processor
    4Gb RAM
    WinXP

Posting regarding a problem – Speed

I built a PC with the above specs in Nov 08, this was my first time.

Recently, while running a resource hungry process I thought to take note of the time from start to finish. The process was running a charting software scan across the entire ASX (over 2,500 shares) looking for specified indicators. So I suppose this will be mainly the processor’s job, not so much the RAM.

I ran the same scan with my laptop and it completed the process much faster. The laptop has lower specs – Duo core and 2Gb RAM.

I’m after some comment/help to see why my PC is slower then a lower spec and older laptop. What/where can I begin my search for a speed problem?

note: I don't know where else to post this, not sure if it is a software or hardware issue. Mod, if this isn't the right forum can you please move it for me? Thanks!

Are they both running XP? How much faster was it?

Quad core doesn't mean faster unless the application is multi-threaded and supports more than two cores.

Sorry I haven't replied again. I've been busy performing the malware removal steps from Chaslang in hope it will fix my speed problem. I also did the same steps for 2 other laptops.

Can I post my processes, services and performance (all screenshots) for someone to comment on? Will this assist in solving speed issues? There seems to be alot of stuff going on in the processes and services for how little I have running at anytime?!

You need to post a current thread in malware so we don't waste time here trying to fix something that might be the result of malware.
When you are declared clean AND if your computer is still slow, then come back to software.

The steps were completed and it seems everything is good in that regards.

For now, we can rule out malware causing the problem. That's 1 rock turned over.

How do I know what the problem is with speed issue? It could be hardware or software... right?

If this is the thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=205139
you did not post any info for the malware experts to look at.
    All you said
You did not have it verified by the pros in malware.

Not really, since no logs were posted in malware.

That just appears suspicious as if something is running that you are not aware of.
