Could anyone help with a problem I have with my desktop PC?

When I power up, power indicator comes on the tower and on the keyboard. No signal to the monitor, no boot up. Switching off at the mains and trying again usually gets it to boot up, but it shuts down (hard) during operation.

I'm thinking it's the PSU. Could it be anything else? Like the Motherboard?

    TIA Folks.

    Hi Emms

Maybe start with the smiple explanations for this first as it could just be as simple as....

Try unplugging all the connections externally and cleaning out the pins and holes etc a brush or a soft cloth will do, then plug them pack in and try.

Have you moved our Desktop reciently, as it could have jarred a card inside and usual suspect is the Graphic Card, unplug the monitor cable from the GFX card and carefully pull out the GFX card then again give the cards slot a quick brush and then replace the card (do note that some cards have a retention clip near the bottom of the card by the slot thet may need moving to allow the card to come out OK). Then plug back in, just make sure ist firmly in and then reconnect and try.

Hi David. Thanks for the reply. Yea, I've tried all of the above that you mentioned. To no avail. In fact I just replaced the PSU and again... no joy.

When it starts up I get two beeps instead of one which I am sure is indicative that something is wrong. I am going to check if the memory has unseated somehow next.... and the beat goes on.....

Check CPU fan is running also, plus unplug and re-plug all internal cables.

Been done. And after installing a new PSU, it rebooted once but then stayed on long enough to let me perform a image backup with acronis. I'm still clueless at this point.... next plan of action... try a different hard drive.... if that doesn't solve it I guess I'll get another desktop as perhaps there are issues with the motherboard.

Well, two short beeps means RAM problems if you have AMI BIOS. Maybe if you know the exact model of your mobo, the mfg. might have the beep codes in a user manual.

Good post Augie and following that try a new CR2032 battery in the mobo, if you have mutilpe sticks of ram try one at a time.

Thanks for completing my thoughts Halo as they somehow get truncated in the process.;) Oh, I just read where these batteries are only good for 3 years if the machine is not plugged in or there is no voltage running by the battery. This doesn't mean it's a rechargeable battery, just if the circuit it supplies is faulty then it will fail at some point. Got that from Intel, I'll try to find the article.
