Post Trojan/Malware: can only get to external sites by IP

I'll try to keep this short.

Fixing a computer that was infected with all sorts of trojans/spyware/malware. It disabled windows firewall, uninstalled most browsers, and wouldn't allow antivirus to run. That was the hard part (or so I thought). Now I can't get anywhere on the internet. I can ping internal and (if i look them up on this computer) external ip's. I can look up internal hosts (like this computer) by name. I can get to google by IP. I cannot get to google by web address.

Tried the following:

Deleting/Uninstalling all Network Connections and Hardware

Ensuring that the connection is set to get all addresses automatically (SOHO setup with router)

repairing the connection (duh)

changed to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP

clean scans with Malwarebytes, AVG, and Spybot

clearing all cookies, history, etc.

re-installing firefox (was previously uninstalled by trojan)

Setup: Windows XP SP2, wired card, SOHO networking (no server, no domain), Router handles DHCP. All other computers working fine.

Been all over the internet with this one. Can't get it licked. Thanks for any help.

 

check your services and see if the DNS client is running.

control panel - admin tools - services

confirm DNS client is running.

 

Try command "ipconfig /all" and gather the IP address of the DNS server. Make sure you can ping the DNS servers IP address.

Then type "nslookup www.complete-cs.com" what do you get?
