After months of chronic problems, my dinosaur-era computer took a nose dive.
Replaced it, however lot of info on old HD not retrievable

I am trying to retrieve my email which was thru Mozilla T'Bird (MS Outlook Express.) Obviously I want to transfer all to my present computer. Most of my problem now centers around old PW which I have long since lost/forgotten.

Running through T'Bird troubleshoot to find that, but keep hitting dead ends. I find TS instructions have selection steps but I do not show/have some of those steps or tabs or selections in my system..

I came across some "toll-free" phone numbers that offer assistance, but past experience tells me these are pay-for-use $ites.

And, so as to not get another fussing, following is furnished:

    Operating System -
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
    Processor -
    2.00 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64
    256 kilobyte primary memory cache
    1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache
    64-bit ready
    Not hyper-threaded
    Drives
80.02 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
69.20 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

    ISP - AT&T UVerse
    Email - Mozilla Thunderbird (1.5?)

Hope infor supplied what is needed. Will furnish more if needed.
Also, hope cleaning up email problem will get me off MG's list of chronic whiners.

And, to the many who have helped and put up with me over the months, a debt of gratitude is owed you.

Are you still working with the old hard drive? Did you install it in your new PC as a second hard drive?

Please elaborate on this. Did you change the PW by accessing your email account via web browser, or what? Can you access your email now via web browser? Have you ever accessed your AT&T email via your web browser?

Not using old HD, tech said it's not compatible w/present system. Irt has not been installed in present computer.
Tried accessing T'bird direct, it finds account, rejects PW
Tried accessing mail through AT&T. It wants to use Quick Fix program which AT&T states will check, and change if need. settings. But Quick Fix cannot find account. It also wants me to change over to Yahoo. Not doing that at present, concerned that will not solve problems.
Not sure about how changed PW (AT&T direct or T'bird direct.) Seem to think used browser.
    Thanks,
Will check back tomorrow. early call tomorrow

Update, mixed bag good and not too good

Trying again to get backlog of email, and this attempt brings up quite a bit.
However, it is not loading anything after Aug 14.
When I cue get mail I see a readout at the screen bottom stating, as an example, 120 messages loading. However, they are not loading and not coming up. I will need to research, but I think some early days are missing frpm when the old computer went out

    If it helps:

    Hewlett-Packard HP dx5150 SFF
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
    2.00 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64
    256 kilobyte primary memory cache
    1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache
    64-bit ready
    Not hyper-threaded
80.02 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
67.64 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space
    ISP is AT&T UVerse
    Browser if Mozilla Firefox
Email is AT&T through Mozilla Thunderbird

I think (hope) infor on comp suffices, if not will chase down more.
Am hoping this glitch can be overcome so I can get on with publishing my newsletters, and you folks can get me out of your hair.
    Thanks

Found this, tried but problem still dexists

    Problems Downloading New Mail

Sometimes Thunderbird has trouble downloading new mail. When this happens, the status bar shows "Building Summary File for Inbox." You may receive new messages that are empty when you try to open them, or multiple entries for the same new message in the inbox, or reported unread messages that cannot be found.

This problem occurs when you do not perform routine maintenance on your inbox. From time to time, you need to compact it. Right-click on the inbox and select "Compact This Folder."

If that doesn't work, close Thunderbird. Using Windows Explorer or Finder, search for a file titled "Inbox.msf" in your Thunderbird application folder. Delete the file, and restart Thunderbird.

If that still doesn't solve the problem, you may need to delete your old account, but you can create a new account with the same settings and transfer all your messages over so you don't lose any of your information.

Well, finally I got AT&T to get in on the problem. I had forgotten I have a fee based TS account with them.
When I reloaded T'bird, after changing password, somehow I wound up with two email accounts. The old one did not get deleted as I thought it had.
The 2d one had settings problems with both incoming and outgoing, and it took AT&T several tries and about 20 minutes to sort.
I uninstalled T'bird and went straight to OEx. Part of the problem was a glitch in T'bird of some sort that deals with cleaning up T'bird. Still not sure what that means.
So, knock on wood, mail is working. Now all I have to do is sort through about 2100 emails.
Many thanks to all who offered help and suggestions. Hoping all this work over the last months will end, and I will not be visiting this site with the frequency I have been. I appreciate all, and your not designating me as Persona Non Grata for being such a PIA.
