potpurri for your vacum cleaner!

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by the new tech guy, Jan 22, 2006.

  1. Hey Guys,
Not to long ago i accidentally discovered a way to make an ordinary vacumn cleaner give off a nice scent when you use it! Here is the story. Well one day i had to put some cofee away in the basement (just got back from food shopping) well while comin down the steps with a container of cofee i dropped the can and it broke open on the step and spilled some cofee. So i put the can away and get the vacumn to clean up the mess. Well after cleaning it up i found that whenever i vacumned the house while that bag was in the vacumn it always smelled like cofee when i was done scince the air blew through the beans and blew the scent out of the exhaust. I never tried it with other stuff but i guess you can use most dry stuff for pot purri. Al you gotta do is suck up some of the stuff you want it to smell like when you put a new bag in and viola! You got yourself a scented vacumn.
    Just a fun fact.

When I was growing up, we had citronella ants that lived under the slab our family room was built on. You wouldn't even know they were there except that they would swarm once or twice every spring. We'd talked to exterminators, and they'd even told us that the treatment to get rid of them is more trouble and invasive than it's really worth, and that we might as well just vaccuum the ants up for the day or two a year that they swarm. Well, that was fine except that the reason that they're called citronella ants is that they smell like citronella (you know, the candles that you burn to keep mosquitos away). So for the rest of the year, every time I'd vaccuum, I'd smell those nasty ants. To this day, my skin crawls when I smell citronella.

Now that you mention it, we didn't ever have much of a mosquito problem around our house. :)

A lot of the citronella ants were winged and would fly around when they swarmed though, if that's what you mean. We'd do our best to keep the vaccuum cleaner handy and vaccuum them up as they came out of the ground, so they wouldn't fly around.

  6. LoL i swear it was not carpet fresh they were litterally cofee grinds from a red can of foldgers cofee. It really did make good potpurri for the vac lol.

Oh yeah for the ants i think the smell from them kept the mosquitoes out.

  7. Oh wow i didnt get that one at first! LOL took me a while! Wow im a little behind... hahaha it was hilarious though. I would like to try it with a peach but it would go bad and stink. But hey, at least it smelled better than moquito candles that cindysnoopy had.

I like your style, dude. ;) Also, as for the carpet fresh theme, you can put baking soda on the carpet, (which is what carpet fresh is...) and the stuff in the bag won't smell as much...

We have dogs and when we vacuum, it smells bad from all the dog hair...

You can purchase scented tablets and beads to drop in your vacuum bag rather than using up your coffee grounds like the new tech guy;):p:D

Tid Bit: I have had several carpet dealers tell me to never use things like carpet fresh or baking soda on my carpet. They are abrasive and actually damage the fibers causing them to break down and you will actually notice an increase in dust within your home your boot. You cannot, once you sprinkle it on the carpet vacuum it all up, just most of it so it does get down into the fibers.

Try taking a little carpet fresh or baking soda and see how they scratch up or dull the shine on your kitchen counter...they run a close second to things like good old comet cleanser..do you really want that in your carpet?

Been using these for years, otherwise the house smells of dog after vacuuming unless you empty the dust bag after every use :)

Coffee granules probably works out cheaper though than the sachets??? Personally I would prefer to put fresh baked bread in my vacuum :p ...man...I love that smell :D

I really don't know...I won't buy a vacuum that uses bags and the ones with 'dust cups' aren't so hot either IMHO. Saving my pennies to get a 'good' vacuum like I had before..one that doesn't need bags and doesn't lose it's pick up power after going through just one room.

I totally agree. When I got married I kinda bought-in to a relationship with the existing vacuum in the house ;) In England, I had an awesome Miele Cat & Dog plus with hepa filter.

OMG....I'm getting old...I'm discussing vacuum preferences

i am in vacuum hell. not only do i have two large black house dogs, and one cat shedding fur all over the place, but i live with dust, and dirt that simply wouldn't be acceptable in england. i have no glass in my windows, only screen, so whereas most people's dust is caused by dead skin cells and the like, mine is actual dirt that's fine enough to come through the screen. i have completely given up dusting, and use a shop-vac to vacuum accumulated dust, cobwebs, insects, scattered dogfood, and of course all that hair. it has to be emptied each time it's used as it is invariably half full of organic matter. i live in very large house. the shop-vac needs a special filter for this type of use. they resemble the air filters in cars, and are about the same price!!. the fins get clogged real easy with the hair and fine dust and have to be blown clean with an air hose. they have a half life of 3mths. even if i could afford to spend LOADS of money on the latest technology, i do not think it would work in this perpetual summer. :(

  15. I never knew they make scent thingies for your vac. As for preferences we have 2 in my house my grandmons old electrolux (we got stuck with that when she moved in with us) and our good old plastic kenmore which breaks about very 6 months and has to be fixed. The electrolux is like twice as old as the kenmore (probably about as old as me or older and im 15 btw) and runs fine. But for a good vac, i would say get yourself a dyson if you can put up the cash for it. We had a guy come to our house once and advertise this vacumn that was really good. My parents really liked it but the guy wanted like $1200 or somthing like that for it (cant remember exact figures) and my dad made him leave scince that is rediculous. He did have a nice scented air cleaner though and it worked pretty good. As for comet cleanser, we use the stuff to clean the bathroom all the time. That and tilex. Then before i vacumn the house my mom sprays everything down in a coat of lysol.

The new tech guy, you really need to stop watching Martha Stewart.

Regarding the door-to-door vacuum cleaner idiots, I like to invite them in and ask for a demo, feign interest and get them to do most of the house, then tell them I'm not interested. :D

hehe...I had a woman at the door selling carpet cleaner once, so I invited her in for the demo. She started to clean a spot right in the MIDDLE of the room.

"Nooooo" I said " you need to do a patch under the couch where it won't show up otherwise I'll have to buy a bottle of the stuff to do the rest of the room"

    :D

Just curious, how do you keep the rain out during heavy storms? Oftentimes, here, it rains hard enough and the wind blows hard enough for the rain to come in at a pretty steep angle... you're furniture etc doesn't get wet?

we have between three and 10ft overhang on the roof, and we are surrounded by trees. they also act as a wind break. but even in houses not so protected one side or the other tends to sheltered. i lived here for a year befor it dawned on me that i had never once closed a window and that the louver glass was ugly and dirty. so i took them all out.

We got a Dyson :) Eric has been a fan of James Dyson since the first time he saw the commercial "I just think things should work properly" a few years ago. I bought him James Dyson's book for Christmas last year. We finally got the vacuum cleaner just before Christmas. We love it.

First time I used my Dyson, I was amazed at the fine dust and dirt it picked up trapped in the carpet.

The carpet was near new and my place is fairly clean, yet first time I used it I had to empty the bowl for every room.

And the best part is there are no filters or bags to change, which can be a hassle and expensive.

    Can't wait.

Is it BYO potpourri or is that New Tech Guys department?

BTW, I'll have to leave mine at home.

I wouldn't go out with my Dyson. I'd be too scared of getting mugged.

They even smell nice if you use potpourri. :D

  30. Hey im just really smart and DO NOT watch the lady who went to cupcake prison! We got an old vac thats a kenmore and actually it wasnt suckin well for a while then i find the prob.... the air filter prob wasnt cleaned in at least two years! Clean it and my parents rejoice. lol. I will def bring the potpurri. When you have a dog your bag does have tendency to stink especially if you have pets. Well you wanna meet up for lunch to talk bout vacs i would greatly beat the crappy food at my cafeteria up at school. Thats all id really be interested. The food. I will get both the kenmore and the electrolux lol. Right now i got a school dance comin up and hopefully find someone to go with and i dont plan on it being my vacumn cleaner. Lol.
