Power but monitor shuts down

My son's computer is having major problems. It powers up (it sounds like it is, though no beeps can be heard), and the monitor appears to be coming on (the power light turns green) but a message immediately appears "Off Mode in 5 Seconds", then it shuts down, won't turn back on until the computer is restarted, and then the whole scenario repeats itself. In addition, the mouse & keyboard won't start. We've tried everything we can think of, obviously haven't tried the right thing since we can't get it back up. Any thoughts or help??

 

The computer was turned off due to a storm that was brewing, all plugged in to the surger protector, but the surge protector was still plugged in. I can't hit F8 because the keyboard isn't responding either. I have another power supply from another case we're not using, I'll try that. Thanks.

 

Make sure your power strip didn't get hit. If you did in fact get hit by the storm, the power strip could have taken the hit before it got to the comp, but it might have ruined the strip.

Or worse, taken out the surge protection in your power bar, thus converting it into a rather clumsy extension cord.

The cheaper surge bars tend to use metal-oxide varistors. They can absorb only so much energy; then they stop providing protection. The power bar continues to carry power, but you have no way of knowing that it's not providing any surge protection.

Surge bars aren't expensive. Replace it just to be sure that you still have surge protection.
