I read this in a thread on malware removal this afternoon, & have no idea what it means?

How does one "Power Cycle your Cable or DSL modem and your router"?

Unplug the power for 30 seconds and plug it back in, this is called power cycling.

Helps to do in order as well. Many a broadband connectivity problem has been solved by nothing more than powering off computer, router, and modem and turning them back on in the reverse of that order, allowing modem and router to complete their power-up initializations before turning on the next piece of equipment.

Excellent! Now I know. Thanks much.

One more question...will doing this mean that I have to re-update my router's firmware? (I have a LinkSys wired router)

P.S. I'm just wondering. I'm not planning on doing this anytime soon, for my router/ cable modem/ network seems to be running just fine. This question is just so I know in the case I ever find myself having to accomplish a "power cycle" of these devices.

No, when you power cycle anything it just resets it, nothing changes really.
