I have an interesting issue, and that is, when I go to bed at night I always power down all my electrical gadgets in my office, PC and Printer and Monitor being one of many, that is the switch at the wall is off so that no electricity is being sent to anything.

In the morning when I power up, my PC does not Boot, I have to physically switch the power button on the top of the tower off then switch it back on again in order for the PC to Boot, so in essence I am pressing the power button on the tower twice in order to start it, any ideas what can be the problem here?

Are you talking about the actual switch on the power supply (back of the tower) or the power button which is really more like a remote control button?

I am referring to the switch on the front of the Tower, not the main power off at the rear of the tower. The starvation of power to the main unit overnight is causing this?

Most rom BIOSes have an option for what to do after a power failure. To start, try setting it to stay powered off and see if that lets you simply push the button once in the morning.

Many thanks for your reply, just the one problem, how on earth does a novice like me go into the BIOS and set that which you have said I ought to, any chance of a detailed:(:confused tutorial?

The BIOS is usually entered by pressing Delete, F1, or F2 immediately after power on or a reboot. On some older Compaq's it is F10 when the cursor jumps to the top right, again before it boots.
On most systems, there is a message that says which key it is or the answer can be found in the users manual..
The setting you are looking for is also usually under power management.
The only way I can be more specific is to know the manufacturer and model of the computer. If it is a "custom built", I need to know the model number of the systemboard.

Yes my pc is custom built, the motherboard is: Asus A8NSLI-P-00

I believe it will be the Delete key to enter the BIOS which you need to do immediately after turning it on.

Yes it is the 'Delete' key, okay what now? in Power Tab there is 'ACPI Suspend Type, ACPI Support, APM Configuration, Hardware Monitor.
I wish I could call upon the guy who built my PC but alas he is abroad.
I did a test earlier, and switched off the PC in the normal fashion, 'Start' and shut down, left the house for 3 or so hours came back pushed the button at the front top of the tower, and nothing, that is the PC switched on but did not boot up, I had to switch off again and immediately switch back on again in order for it to boot, bizarre state of affairs.

Anyone able to offer me some support here? I am still faced with the continuing problem?

    I see three possibilites:
    1) There are enough things plugged into your wall switch so there is a voltage drop when it is turned on. This can cause the power supply in the tower to think it has too much current being drawn and it will then not power up correctly.
    2) There is too much current being drawn on the standby voltage which is supplied to the USB and PS2 ports. Printers and powered devices should not be affecting this; but, you might try unplugging anything USB (except a keyboard or mouse) to test this.
    3) The systemboard is failing, most probably due to bad capacitors (which ASUS loves to use ) If you inspect the capacitors around the CPU (they look like small cans and there are over a dozen of them right next to the CPU chip ) and see that they are puffy, split open, or leaking brown ooze, that is the problem. In the early stages of this problem, your symptoms are classic; turn it on once and it doesn't, force it off and then back on, and it works fine. If this is it, you need to make sure you are backed up and address it as it is going to get worse.

Thank you so very much for your input, when I read on and took realisation of what might be regarding the Asus motherboard, I cringed!!! Do you know what I did, I unplugged from the USB a Card Reader which I had left permanently plugged into my PC......and guess what, my PC Boots first time, even when I switch off the power from the wall, and likewise when I just switch off but still allow a current to be present, so you you see it was something as simple as this, and of course it needed someone like you to Analyze the problem, thank you once again. Hey do not laugh, but I now have a new problem!! shall I mention it here or start a new thread? I shall mention it here, I was surfing this morning and suddenly my screen went 'BLUE' and the PC rebooted, it came up with a catalogue of what might be the problem, I started by the obvious, going to the Microsoft website and installing updates, my PC is configured for automatic updates so nothing to install, so what do you think it might be? I am going to run a complete virus scan, if that does not find anything, any ideas??? Thank you.

I'm really glad to hear it wasn't bad caps!
The key to any blue screen is what it says and the most important parts are the stop 0x0000?? and, if listed, which program caused it. So?

Hello, again thank you for your input, I have just had another 'Blue Screen' episode, this time the window informed me it was something to do with my RAM, I followed the instruction, there is a log file saved on my desktop, but Nero opens it, and how will I see what it has logged?

http://www.memtest86.com 's free version is the best memory test on the planet. Get the ISO image and use Nero to burn it; but, read the instructions.
What I really want to know is what the "stop oxoooooo??" is on the screen and all you have to do is to Google that to find answers.

Okay all well and good, thank you once again, aside from the memtest feature, the 'x000000' that you are referring to as being of interest to you, how do I come across these, are they in the saved log file when performing a memtest?

No, they are right at the top of the blue screen.

you'll have to excuse my total ignorance here, the blue screen appears momentarily, a whole bunch of writing in white script across a blue background, then the PC restarts, so it is not possible for me to even contemplate seeing what has been written, Is there something which is logged in Windows, I am certain there is a log which is created every time the PC experiences warnings and errors, but where, do you happen to know where?

I have found the log, event viewer, it has the log 'Error Code 1000008e, I googled it and it relates to my RAM?:cry what can be done to solve the situation, replace the RAM modules, I seem to recall a similar situation and my RAM modules were tested and all was in order??!!

    Re: Serious Error/Blue Screen

I thought the problem had been solved but alas no, just now my PC reboots, and the customary 'windows has recovered from a serious error' in the event viewer it tells me 'system error category 102' what the heck is going on? can anyone offer any advice please.
