Power down problem.

When I shut down my PC (Window XP). It starts to shut down but when it gets to the screen stating "Window is shutting down" it stops there and that where it stays. Has anyone ever seen this before?

 

One of mine did that when I installed a USB device. Everything worked, but it wold not shut down, just hang like you described. Been a while, but I think it was a common problem with that device. Have you added anything to your computer lately?

Could you describe your hardware configuration?
Also, does your HDD continue or stop working when the shut down process hangs? You may check it by verifying the HDD red led near the power button.

 

I have an external Hard drive. I will remove it and see if that works.
And yes the HD stops running.

 

After this kind of shutting down does Windows starts with the blue screen and scan disk? Or does it consider the shut down process to be correct?

 

No scan disk, It looks like the shut down process to be correct.

 

It means some device doesn't shut down properly. That is why I asked you about your hardware. But frankly, I'd recommend you to relax because this kind of problem is very hard to resolve. If the OS doesn't execute errors, it's not a big trouble, you may shut down your computer manually.

 

I'm going to remove the hard drives via the icon on the bottom right and then power down and see if it powers down all the way...(tonight)

OK. I was able to remove 3 of the 5 ext HD and still no good.
I call my friend and he told me that every so often when he would power
it up it would do a scan disk run. So it looks like it's not a clean power down.
