About a week ago, I posted a problem with my computer not turning off using the button or the Start->Turn Off, and I posted the problem here (nobody replied). Now, today, I got a stick of 512MB memory, which is PC 2700 and I put it in. I had a little trouble getting it in at first but it went. I flipped on my power supply switch and nothing happened. Then I tried the button, nothing happened. I opened it up to see if I had accidentally bumped something loose which it didn't look like. I took out the new stick of memory and I set it up again and with the power supply switch on, I managed to get a spark of power that started the computer. Every thing seemed to work fine...the keyboard and mouse lit up, and the hard drive light came on, but the monitor did not. I went to the back to see if I had the monitor cord hooked in right. It was, so I tried to push it in more. The first second I touched it, my computer shut down. I got another spark of power, and pushed in the power cord and the computer stayed on. Almost anything I touched didn't matter, but when I touch the monitor cord, it shuts off. I'm not sure if I have a video card problem or what, but this was a temporary replacement card for the one that seemed to have broken before. I hope this is just something simple I have to do. One other thing is that when it starts up, it makes a beeping noise, which I have heard means something's wrong (obviously).

    Thanks.

    sounds like the
    monitor,cable or video card

generally not the best idea to play around with cables while the computer is turned on !

    Turn computer off
remove monitor cable from video card
take side cover off of computer
remove retention screw from video card
    take video card out
    make sure contacts are clean
put video card back in making sure it is seated firmly
replace retention screw for video card
plug monitor back in, making sure it fits securely

    if it doesnt work
have you got access to another monitor you can try ?

your previous video card may not be broken
or it may indicate another problem
