Power supply EPS12V 8 pin connector doesn't match mobo socket

    Hi

I have an asus p5k-e mobo and a Thermaltake Toughpower 750W PSU as seen here http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Power/ToughPower/W0116/w0116.asp

My problem is that the 8 pin EPS12V connector from the psu does not mechanically fit into the 8 pin motherboard socket. The 4 pins on the right hand side mechanically fit but not the ones on the left. So I end up having to split the 8pin connector into 2 4-pin connectors and only use one of them on the right hand side, leaving 4 empty pins on the left side of the motherboard connector. In the manual it says this is fine and even out of the box the left hand side of the socket is covered by a black tab. It's just that I have never have encountered this mechanical incompatibility and was wondering if I will run into power related problems down the track.

    Thanks
    Sam

I think (going from memory here) that 4 pins is fine, and the other is needed only if you have (2) separate cpu's...I think...

I was going to just leave it at using a single 4 pin +12V connector, however this is a new build using an intel e9450 quad core and a 9800 GTX with 2 gig of ram.

Being my first new build for myself in forever I want to get it right and not run into problems later on. (My previous PC was an Athlon 1600+ XP single channel DDR with a 5500FX :). I didn't want to take the chance of underpowering the motherboard so looking at the pinouts of an EPS12V socket it is simply a row of +12V and a row of COM pins. Since the power supply 8 pin connector followed this layout (a row of yellow +12V wires checked by a multimeter) and a row of black COM lines I didn't see how it could cause a problem. So I plugged in the other 4 pin +12V plug and even though it wasn't mechanically the same it plugged in easy enough and I have been using the PC all day with all 8 pins connected with no problem.

If anyone thinks this is wrong please let me know before it starts smoking :(

    Thanks
    Sam

Ok, so far so good. No smoke and it is running great!

I can't believe the difference from my old 1600+ athlon XP that I have been using for around 10 years to the q9450. The speed is phenomenal. It's a bit scary actually :)
