Where can I get a reliable power supply for my HP a6400f Pavilion computer?

I haven't worked on an HP in this series for a while; however it should take a standard "ATX" size replacement power supply from what the inside pics I found show.

For the money, the ThermalTake 500-watt (https://smile.amazon.com/Thermaltak...&s=pc&sprefix=thermaltake,aps,182&sr=1-1&th=1) is a bargain at $45. It's solid; I've used almost a dozen over the past few years as replacements for customers with no issues whatsoever.

As for the no-name ones that are a few bucks less: Drop the word "reliable" and it sums them up perfectly. Hope this helps.

    Thank you for replying.

The last time my Vista OS computer stopped working I went through the usual troubleshooting procedures and then reinstalled Windows Vista from the reinstall partition on the hard drive.

The reinstallation lasted about 2 hours and there were no problems. It is not connected to the internet. After it was finished I left the computer turned on for a couple of days and everything was still okay. Then I turned it off and back on for a few hours. Still good. So I turned it off for a week and then turned it back on. About 10 minutes after I turned it on, it told me that something was wrong with Windows and that Windows was stopped to prevent further damage to the computer.

This has been happening several times for the last year with exactly the same symptoms.

Because none of the testing I did showed any problems, and because the computer never turned off during the reinstallations, I am not sure that the power supply is the cause of the problem. The memory tests (some lasting a couple of hours) also revealed no problems. When I go through the boot options, the display is rock solid and the computer never shuts down.

If you have any ideas why the computer would remain on during reinstallation and subsequent restarts but would die if left off for a week and then turned on, I would appreciate whatever you have to say.

Haven't been on here for awhile due to finishing up finals, but here goes.

The simple way to usually figure out if its the power supply is to try turning the PC back on as soon as it shuts off. If the power supply is to blame, the blue light on the front of the PC won't turn on and no fans will be spinning. Although a bad motherboard can cause the same sumptoms, the difference with a motherboard failure is the box (blue light, fans) will almost always turn on but nothing will display on the screen.

If the PC is physically staying on but freezing up or giving you constant errors or the "blue screen of death", the most likely cause is a failing hard drive. Given the age of your PC (Vista) this is likely if these are the symptoms.

Just remember - based on Vista, your PC is somewhere between 10-15 years old; somewhat past a home computer's average lifespan. Instead of spending time and money beating a dying horse, I would consider spending $200-$250 on a decent "off-lease refurbished" Dell Optiplex desktop. Look for one with a solid-state drive (SSD) and preferably a one-year warranty from the refurbisher. Dell OptiPlex units are "enterprise grade" (in non-geek, this means built like a brick s**thouse for IT people like myself who want very high reliability). I recently got one from Amazon for a friend who needed to do video editing on a very tight budget This is an example of one on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Optiple...nics&sprefix=dell+optiplex+re,aps,181&sr=1-23) that will be infinitely faster than what you have now.

    Hope this helps.

I appreciate your comments and help, and I agree with them. :) That said...

The only reason I'm trying to make the Vista computer work is that CorelDraw (version 12) won't work on my Windows 10 system. Keeps abruptly closing without an notification. I've been using version 12 on the Vista computer for several years without problems.
