Frist let me tell you what I've got. HP pavilion 746c desk top. It came with 512mb ram, P4 2.4 processor, 64mb shared video mem, 80gb hard drive, 200watt power supply, and the motherboard is a MSI MS-6577v2.1 (Xenon 4). That's what it came with. I upgraded to -1024mb ram, navida 5200@256mb, 160gb hard drive. I found out that the navida 5200 is junk. And I would like to get a better video card, but the bigger video cards I would like to have require at least 300-350watt power supply. My question is, will my motherboard handle that big of a power supply or even bigger??? Maybe even a 500watt?

Yes it should do.....PSU's convert AC power from your power point, to DC power suitable for electronic equipment.

Your system resources will only take what they require, so you can't over-do things no matter how much wattage is available.

The main thing to check would be that your new PSU is physically capable of fitting inside your case.
HP system cases are not known for their, 'available room' inside.
Double check your measurements and you should be OK!

    Regards.....
