Will any power supply work with any motherboard/processor or does it have to be a certain type? If you need to know the motherboard, processor, and power supply that i'm thinking of buying I can post the links. Thank you.

the one i'm getting is part of a comp. case and it says that it has 420W and 12V, nothing about amps but i'm guessing I can do 420W/12V to get the amps, correct?

well the budget is not that big of a deal, and i do plan on playing games with the comp, so i would probably want to use that second one, right?

ok thanks for the info, one more question, my parents have an IBM comp thats about 11 years old and the motherboard has gone bad, we're thinking of buying a new motherboard for it, i heard that the power supply for that comp won't work with another motherboard, the only reason i can think of is that the plug that goes into the motherboard is different for IBM comps, is any of that true or is the guy that i talked to just trying to sell me a new power supply so he can make money?

the older systems run on different power requirements. 11 years is the stoneage in pc's

well we would probably buy them a new computer instead of building one, the only reason i'm building one for myself is because i know what i buy in the stores won't be what i need, but thanks anyway

There have been numerous types of power supplys, notably AT and ATX. AT's are the older units. There are adaptors that will allow newer power supplies to fit older boards, I have one myself (my BBS uses a K6 200Mhz MB/CPU). You would also need a power supply from what I've read.

They aren't the only ones out there, just the most common.
