Hello, I need some help. The fan in my power supply has quit working so I need a new power supply. Any recommendations? I was trying to find the output of mine but is not listed on the unit, only model # and input voltage.
My computer is several years old, it is a Sony Vaio w/AMD Athalon. I was told a 350w would work fine but I need to know are most power supplys the same size? Newegg has one I was going to order but I would hate to order it and it not work in my case.

Just get an ATX power supply. Which is basicly any power supply you can find. You have to go out of your way to get the wrong type these days.

As for the size of power supply, yes a 350W should work just fine. Some people here might tell you to go bigger but I really doubt you need it. Most computers come with a 300W or 350W these days as a standard, unless you get a really good computer.

If you want to double check you can use this calculator ( http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ ) to get an idea of what size of power supply you need.

Power supply is not good place to skimp, it's also better to have more juice than ya need, Lot's of generic are poorly rated.
IMO the total power you need should be no more than 75% of the total out put of the PSU

If you want a brand recommendation, Antec's power supplies are generally quite well thought of and highly recommended. As another poster suggested, you're generally better off avoiding generic or off-brand power supplies. Even if they work OK initially they're more likely to go belly up sooner than a good brand name power supply like those from Antec.

Hey guy's thanks for the responses. I want to order one online somewhere but alot of places aren't listing the dimensions. I guess I'll have to call them up and verify the size.

You don't need to ask for dimensions. It's a standard, they are all the same. Just look at all the power related stats The physical dimensions arn't a concern, you don't need to worry about that at all.

Actually, no, thats not the case. If you have a midi tower case or somthing smaller than a full tower, then somtimes the PSU can be taking up the same space the CD drive should be taking up.

You don't need to worry about the mounting plate especially, but the depth is usually important for smaller cases.

Thanks for your help.I think my
psu is going because my computer is emitting an ambulance like sound. When I remove the side panel all is well. The CPU fan is working well.

Either your CPU is getting too hot, or your voltages are out of range. Can you check these two variables through BIOS?

Not really, just hit the right key as you start up, and the menu is usually pretty easy to navigate from there

The fan in my power supply quit working recently too, but rather than buy a new P/S I just replaced the fan. Most of them are standard 80mm fans just like add in case cooling fans. The connector is a weird little two pin connector which connects to the board inside the power supply and it's probably impossible to find the right connecto so i just got a case fan with a 4 pin power connector and ran the wires out with the rest of the wires from the power supply then connected it to an unused power lead outside the P/S.
work great and it cost 12 bucks instead of 40 or more.
