Are they all the same? If I have an P4 Asus A7V8X-X board, and I buy a new power supply will they both be automatically compatible?

What if I put this around the other way. If I buy a new motherboard (a recent model I'm talking...), will I have any problems connecting it to my old power supply?

It seems that just to do 1 change on he mainframe of my computer requires practically changing everything!

Most are compatable with nearly any MOBO. Now that is not true with Cases, especially HP, Dell and Sony systems. Look at what they support for connectors (PCI-E, SATA or 20/24 pin).

Avoid generic, The PSU is the most important piece of Hardware in a system.

    Dell is proprietary
Post your exact MOBO & hardware
Post info on your old PSU & we'll direct you
Lot's of newer MOBO require 24pin main PSU's

depends on of you got desktop or tower case you`ll have to look at what fits in your case and same plug ends for your mother board. hope it helps.

    I'm currently using the following:
    Asus A7V8X-X
    AMD Athlon XP 1.27 Ghz
    768 Mb of RAM
    Seagate 60 Gb ST360021A
    Western Digital 150 Gb WD1600JB-00DUA3
    Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440

    Did I miss anything?

I'd like to change my fan.

I was thinking of getting a DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D as a mainboard, and plugging my dell inspiron's intel 2.66Ghz chip on that along with the memory and HD's listed above. I'd also use the power supply I have (is there any way of identifying it without tearing my computer apart?). I can't use my video card obviously since it's an AGP card which doesn't work with the DFI, but that's the least of my worries.

The system your currently use any standard ATX, 20 pin main, suggest a Brand name 350w minimum PSU ( it wont be enough for a DFI MOBO)

The DFI Ultra D's need's a Good Quality PSU, native 24pin main.
    The DFI Ultra D mobo's require 4 power connectors= one 24pin main, one 4pin 12v, one 4pin molex and one 4pin Floppy
    I suggest a OCZ 520w powerstream
Here's DFI's Power Supply Reccomended List

Here's a build guide for DFI

I use a DFI Ultra D, they are Awsome MOBO's, they just need Quality parts

As far as you old PSU you should be able to just remove the side pannel & see what ya got, I'll bet it will fall short of the requirements for DFI:)

Is there a place to look in the name of a motherboard that tells me the required wattage that I'll need coming from a power supply? How does the guide website you gave know that I need at least a certain amount? I'm sure not everyone knows because they actually have one!
