PQIMount Driver problem

I have had a few problems (5 times in the last two months but twice in the last two days) with my PC completing its boot -- after pressing the start button, all the lights on the tower begin the same as always and my monitor will for a split second come on then everything seems to die (power remains on - just nothing happening and am left with a black screen). I can get the PC to boot by holding the power button down for 5 sec to turn off the power and press the power button again to start.

I looked at the Event Log -- Start/Run/type eventvwr and click OK. I found the entry copied below (3rd one in log after boot started). Details at the Help and Support Center address gives more details with instructions to:
1-Verify that the drivers are configured correctly.
2-Verify that the computer is running the most current version of the drivers.

I can't find any further info on PQIMount to follow their instructions. Can anyone help me?

BTW, when I am at the Help and Support location, I click on Advanced System Information/View Error Log and see that this problem has occured many other times which have been transparent to me.

The process PQIMount.sys - PQI Image Mounting Device Driver belongs to the software V2i Protector by PowerQuest Corporation (www.powerquest.com).

Description: File PQIMount.sys is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers. Known file sizes on Windows XP are 46800 bytes (85% of all occurrence), 46779 bytes. The driver can be started or stopped from Services in the Control Panel.File PQIMount.sys is not a Windows core file.

Important: Some malware can camouflage themselves as PQIMount.sys, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder.

Do you have Partition Magic and/or Ghost installed?

    Thanks for the reply Shadow,

I looked in C:\Windows\System32\drivers and didn't see PQIMount.sys (also did a Start/Search and the PC didn't find it on the C drive). Couldn't find Services in the Control Panel so I looked in Start\Run\msconfig\Services tab and didn't see anything that resembled PQIMount, V2i Protector or PowerQuest.

I don't have Partition Magic (that I am aware of - did a search on Partition Magic and found nothing). I used to have Ghost 9.0 as part of SystemWorks Priemer 2005 but I got fed up with Norton due to problems I was having with their firewall and AV programs. I got rid of SystemWorks with SymNRT (also, just did a search on Ghost and found 10 JPG files and a Norton Ghost 9.0 folder with 3 XML files).

One more piece of info, Shadow. I clicked on the www.powerquest.com link in your response after I made my last response and see that V2i Protector is part of Norton. Originally I installed SystemWorks Priemer 2005 in March and the problem I am having with system failing to completely boot-up started after that point -- coincidence, maybe just another problem with the Norton stuff?

More than likely there is a remnant registry entry that is trying to startup this device on system startup. If you can't find that file within your c:\windows\system32\drivers folder, then you might also want to search the registry for that exact file. But, becareful. I'd almost recommend doing a full registry backup and then making an attachment and saving it here for our perusal, unless you feel safe in doing the removal yourself.

I never feel safe around the registry (also don't know how to perform a search of the registry). I made a backup and have attached it -- if you can check it out and give me your opinion I would appreciate it.

Wait a moment the file didn't get attached -- seems that I have it under the wrong extention. I have it as *.reg, how should I change that backup for attachment?

I'd try zipping the file and then posting it. Or change the extension to .txt

I zipped it but for some reason when I click Manage Attachments, pick the ZIP, and UPLOAD, it doesn't complete (blue progess bar completely fills but it will not get past the - Uploading File(s) Please Wait stage.

Maybe I need to shutdown AOL and reboot - if that doesn't work I'll keep trying - I have not run into this problem before.

I am pretty sure I am running into a problem with the attachment because it is so big - 5.13 MB. Even the entire attachment process fails after about 10mins. I tried attaching small files with no problem. This is a backup of my entire registry, is there a smaller section I can backup and ZIP to send for your perusal?

Your attachment is too large. Try a file hosting service like Walgata.com it's free. Then post the link to the file.

    theefool/SPD,

I finally figured how to get to Start/Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services (DOH). I didn't see PQIMount but there was a Symantec CoreLC which pointed to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe.

Apparently I still have some Symantec items on my PC after using SymNRT.

Could this be starting PQIMount.sys? Symantec CoreLC has a Startup Type of Automatic, and Service Status of Started should I change those to Disabled and Stop?

Yes stop the service and disable it, then remove the service.

  15. wwalker555

    wwalker555 Corporal

That didn't do it. Stopped and disabled the service, rebooted twice to make sure the service didn't get restarted but then I checked Event Viewer and the same error was still there.

    @ theefool

You want to take over on this, you are a bit better with the registry than I am.

I just hope this works. I just now downloaded the two files. I'm presently working on the issue.

In the end, I'll create a .REG file to run, just give me a bit of time! :)

Okay, I found the culprit (I hope)....

It is located in an obvious place. I recommend setting a restore point before you attempt this.

There are a few other remnants, but this is the major portion....

I recommend a reboot after this.

    Download this:

PQI.txt, then rename it to PQI.REG

Just rightclick the file, where ever you save it, then click rename. Then double click the file, and select Yes.

    Then reboot.

The contents of that file is such:

    Attached Files:

    • pqi.txt
      File size:
      335 bytes
      Views:

It looks like your fix got rid of the the PQIMount error. I have rebooted five times / restarted twice with no evidence of the PQIMount error in the event log.

Unfortunately, on the first reboot after applying the fix, I did get the problem where the PC failed to completely boot up that I described when I started this thread:

I do appreciate your help getting rid of the error -- at least we will know that is not the cause of the boot problem should it continue.

Do you have any ideas on that?

I'm happy to hear that my file worked out for you. :)

Your other problem could be a monitor issue, video card issue or a PSU (Power suppy Unit) issue.

I've seen this happen when a video card is putting out a freq that an old monitor can't handle.

But, since this happens occasionally on your computer, I'm going to first guess it is the PSU.

    Anyone else have any suggestions?

Also, are you sure you removed norton? Cause your registry has A LOT of symantec related entries in it. If you want to get rid of them, I could create another .reg file for you to run. Just note, that since there looks to be over a hundred entries in there, it will take quite a bit of time for me to create an uninstallation for you.

I'd suggest running CCleaner or some other registry cleaning tool to help clean out more registry entries.

I was on my third install of SystemWorks (upgrades each year due to subscriptions needing to be renewed). But, I had so many problems with them on the 2005 version, I finally decided to get rid of it on 7/2 using SymNRT. So maybe this can explain why there are so many entries.

I am sure I would be better off with a cleaner registry and would appreciate anything you can do for me.

I have everything checked in the Registry Integrity section of CCleaner, should I make sure anything else is done to make sure it does a proper cleaning? And should I then re-upload HKLM\System and HKLM\Software, after running CCleaner, so you would have a better starting point?

I have run CCleaner multiple times and for the first time today just realized that the Registry Issues operation is not included when you run the Cleaner (give people a tool and they still can't get things right -- ). After I ran the cleaner I opened the Registry Issues section, did a Scan For Issues and there were many, many Norton and Symantec items. After I fixed the issues, I run scan again and there were only 9 ActiveX/Com items, all in HKCR and having to do with Symantec.

Hopefully there will not be to many Norton/Symantec registry items now. I uploaded the HKLM/System and HKLM/Software at the following locations:
(If you have a problem with the System items - I got a message after the upload finished that the server had shutdown... let me know if it needs to be reloaded.)

You can go ahead and remove your original files that you uploaded. I have successfully downloaded your new entries. Just give me time to peruse through them. This could take up to an hour or more to go through this.

Another question, you DO NOT USE:

    Norton Ghost?

Side note: Or a rant, grumble, complaint, whine:

I do hate going through all the class IDs (CLSID). Norton installs so much junk in the registry. :(

Okay, this is taking quite a bit of time, I'm thinking of writing a program to speed things up. In case a situation like this comes up again. I'll post something I hope by tonight. Unless someone beats me to it.

No - I do not use Ghost. It was my intent to eliminate anything Norton related from my life when I used SymNRT back on 7/2 to remove SystemWorks. I am sure there are and will be many people that swear by and love Symantec/Norton, I used to be one of them before this year... I hope many get to read this thread and understand what has to be done to rid themselves of the strangle those products put on a PC.

My problem is almost identical to wwalker55, except I've never installed Norton Ghost, but I do have Power Quest Driver Image 7.0 and NAV 2006 both installed. I get the same errors resulting in a crash since I installed NAV 2006. It is my belief this is the genesis of the conflict.

Could I effect the same result by simple uninstalling Power Quest (I do not use)or will the registry also need editing?

Thank you for your direction on this.

It has been so long since I got the PQIMount Driver problem resolved, I honestly can't remember exactly what I did to eliminate the problem. I still get the problem where my PC will not finish it's boot process (although the occurances of that problem are now very infrequent). I do know that it took a bit to get rid of all of the Norton trash with the help of theefool - and with CCleaner.

I had had no problems with Norton until I installed NSW 2005, sorry to hear they are still causing problems for some with NAV 2006.

Everyone has their opinion but I am no fan of Norton due to the problems they caused me and would recommend against using their products -- I now use AVAST! and have been happy.

I have this same error message. I don't have a problem booting up though. This message only appears when my computer tries to connect to my router. I don't really understand how to remove it. Can someone walk me through this step by step?
