Prepaid phones, can they work with Squareup?

I know I should be asking this of the companies themselves but neither the cell company I'm thinking of, Straight Talk http://www.straighttalk.com or Square https://squareup.com/ is saying that the phones and card readers work with each other. The Straight Talk guys don't know what I'm talking about and the Square guys, well they don't even have a phone number and I'm still waiting to hear back from the email I sent. So I'm asking if anyone has any experience with either.

Basically I want to be able to take credit cards on site. If there's a better solution to Square and Straight Talk I'm also open to suggestions. I am however hesitant to sign up for another 2 year cell phone plan as the taxes and fees seem to double the cost of the service and the prepaid phones don't seem to suffer from that problem, you know up front how much you're going to pay. I've looked at PayPal and Intuit card reader/services and they all seem to be in about the same situation, nobody knows nothing.

I assume it's as much of a banking type issue as it is a technology issue. A credit card swiping service may be reluctant to offer it's service to disposable phones. Maybe too much risk for fraud, maybe I'm just paranoid.

Update: I took the plunge after looking at most other non-contract carriers and went with Straight Talk. I bought the LG Optimus Q, downloaded the Square app, activated it which takes a day, and it works.

Now I just need to settle in to using an Android phone after being tortured with a Windows 6.5 phone for so many years. I'm so glad that my contract finally ran out on that thing.

 

If anyone has any suggestions for a hotspot app for Android 2.3 let me know.
