As the old story always goes....
I have recently aquired a Compaq Presario 1200 xl 110 laptop. It was given to me because the previous owner could not get it to turn on.

I cant get past step one with this thing. The battery is possibly dead.... however the power a/c adapter works fine and I have tested it with another Presario Notebook that I have and it works fine. I have tried to turn it on with both the battery in place and removed. It doesnt do anything at all.

The green indicator light that the power cable is plugged in at the bottom of the keyboard is on (not talking about green light on actual cable itself) indicating that at least some power is flowing through the laptop.

I have searched the site here and have searched the net and can only find references to the power jack's soldered connections failing and having to resolder them. however I dont believe this is the culprit as there is some power flowing through it as indicated by the Green Light.

Does anyone have any ideas or similar experiences? Everything so far is making me think the motherboard has failed.... Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have an issue that I've never heard of before. My laptop was dropped
and stopped booting. The power light came on but nothing else
happened. I checked it out till I gave up on the pulling
batteries.,plugs and pushing the power button. I put it away a few
months ago, last weekend I was going to look at it and maybe look for
another motherboard on ebay. I plugged it in and it booted. It worked
all the drives, even networked it for a day and a half. Then stopped
booting again. Got the power light again. I replaced the CMOS
battery, after that I tried the plug, batteries and button thing
again, nothing. Just a power light.
Is there a timed reset or something that takes days to reset?
    Any ideas welcome. Please.
    TIA Durk

    Durk,

I have had 2 compaq presario 1200xl-106 laptops with this same
issue, power light only, and have found a common problem exists in
these motherboards where the bios chip develops shorts. I have
replaced the chip with a new socket and plcc chip on the top side of
the motherboard with a mounting spot ready under the modem. This
was developed by a gentleman from Italy and it has fixed many
motherboards. If you need more info maybe you can send me a mossage.

    Hi All
I have a compaq presario 1200-XL-111,the problem I have just started getting is when I plug the ac
adaptor in the led on the adator flashes all the time and the led on the laptop that says the adaptor
is connected is doing the same.
That is all I get it won't boot up or do anything,it was working fine but I turned it off one night
and went to use it the following day and that is what I was greeted with, has anybody any ideas I hope
it is ac adaptor not the mobo.
I am getting correct voltage when it is not connected but wonder if it is breaking down under load

    Hi
The voltage converter board that charges the battery had gone dead short.
At the moment I have removed it until I can obtain one.
I must check my spelling before posting SORRY.

    Ted,
Some notebooks have a small dedicated board that controls the battery charge rate instead of the main board itself.
If something goes wrong with the battery charge control function, it saves you from replacing a MB. It still has a AC to DC converter cord, but the amount of charge is controlled by the little board he describes in the notebook.

I believe it is actually a charge control board, not a converter.

    Hi
The correct term according to Compaq is voltage converter board.
    Cheers
