I was unfortunate enough to buy a compaq presario 2190us laptop.

It's got an ATI radeon mobility card with 64 megs shared memory.

I was wondering if anyone knows whether it is possible to install a new (different) videocard. Compaq says no, but they don't provide the best support. The two access points under the laptop do not provide access to the videocard. Apparently, I'd have to take the casing off. Once again, this kind of work is not described in any manual put out by compaq. I'm kicking myself for selling my inspiron 8000. It was beast, but so easy to work on.

Any suggestions (barring throwing this thing on the trash heap) would be appreciated...

    Thanks,
    Paul

Unless your laptop has a PCI or AGP slot, your video is onboard.

I can tell you your laptop probably does not have what you need.

    What's wrong with it anyway?

Your laptop can take up to 1GB of RAM. Your Video is shared with the system RAM. You may want to upgrade to help with this issue.

Thanks for the reply. There is nothing really wrong with it; the video performance on some games is sub-par. My inspiron 8000 with less processor speed, less RAM, and a 16 meg nvidia card, for example, played RTCW:ET way better. I've got a little more than 700 megs of RAM in the compaq (in addition to the 64 the video card borrows). Games still get a bit choppy. I probably shouldn't expect much with what I've got. I had a nvidia geforce 2 go card lying around and was hoping I could pop it in the compaq, but I think you are right.
    Thanks again,
    Ocnitsa
