    Compaq Presario 2210us laptop.
    XP Home.

Computer came into shop wasn't keeping correct system time. I figured it was a dead BIOS battery. I took the laptop apart and replaced the battery. Should solve the problem right? Wrong. It keeps the correct time when it is on and booted into windows. If I turn off or restart the machine when it is on AC power it will keep the time thru a reboot or being turned off overnight. The problem is when I either reboot or turn the machine off without being plugged into AC power it looses the correct time. Most of the time it will have the time it was shut off or rebooted as the time.

I tried to repair the W32 time and also tried a third party sync software to sync with a time server. This works, but only if connected to the internet. I'm totally out of ideas and really need some help!

    Thanks all!

It sounds like you have a bad connection on your MB, that shuts down the power to the clock and is not letting the battery power make it to your clock when the external power is not connected. I would start by checking the connections on the board

Hows the time in the bios? Also if the battery is not keeping you'd see bios resetting every boot.. is that happening too? You can test it out by making some minor changes, like cap locks or boot order and see if they stick. Is the timezone set right in Windows?

I have a Compaq notebook PC that loses time in the same manner and I do not see "bios resetting every boot". As I recall, I have never changed any BIOS settings from the default.

Is that signficant here? I don't know, I'm just offering it as a point that might be relevant. In other words, if I, or manardshizz, did change some BIOS settings from default, then would we see a BIOS resetting screen when I bootup?

    Hi All,

Seems like the basic design of the Clock, which is part of the BIOS, is such that it will begin to lose time way before it starts to lose the BIOS Setup. The system clock is in Software and gets it's time from the BIOS clock only on bootup. I really don't think that the battery is Manard's problem though.

I tried changing the boot sequence and then logged into windows. left machine on for a minute or two then shut it off (all the while running off battery not AC power). When I turned it back on a few minutes later and went into BIOS I discovered that it didn't hold the changes to the boot order I made. Where do I go from here????

Also, i forgot to mention that I already updated to the newest BIOS for this model.

    Thanks for the help!
