I know you guys are good on this forum because you have helped me with numberous issues over the last 10 years or so. Any, my HP Pavillion P7-1020 sjust started to act up a little. In the MORNING ONLY, I have to push the power button twice. The first time I push it hte light turns on then off. I push it again and the PC boots up like it should. Over the past few weeks, I have inserted a Blue Ray writer and then changed the cable from VGA to DVI-I. That is when it appeared to start the issue. It does not seem possible that the DVI cable would cause this unless the software on the onboard PC changed. About 4 months ago, I added an additional USB card to give me more slots. had no issues after that. Its only been recently after the Blue Ray. Just wondering where I should start first. Is is a cmos battery going bad. Is it not enough power from the PSU or am I starting with a new issued.
Looking forward to seeing responses. Because its a morning issue only, this may take a while to solve if I have to start disconnecting things. That is why I want you opinion on a place to start.

Is there a difference in the power overnight as opposed to later in the day? ie. Is everything connected to a surge protector which gets turned off at night but not during the day even if you turn the computer off during the day.

Not that I am aware of. I have been thinking about the cmos battery. i wonder if it is weak. If it sits all night the systme drains and cannot start on the first kick in the pants. But will on the second. All day long if I turn it off, there is enought stored up to keep it turning on. i am also thinking that if I had the issue with drawing too much power from my addons, wouldn't that make the turn on problem happen everytime?

I agree with you it sounds like a bad CMOS battery to me. I thought it getting no power at night would just confirm that but I think I would start with a new CMOS battery. Intermittent problems like you are having are usually battery related. It could be power supply but I'm betting on the battery.

This morning I started the PC after turning on the monitor and sat down to watch and listen to it. The monitor displayed and error message saying ERROR CPU fan failed. the internal box is not that dirty because it was opened not long ago and I had vacuumed it then. So what I have done since the error this morning is vacuum the case again better than before. Sprayed everything wiht compressed air - all open slots, the cpu fan and heat sink, the psu and all connections. I then looked to see if bios needed updating. There it was, in the bios update - a cpu fan curve change. Not sure what that means but I upgraded the bios. HP says I should be able to check the CPU fan function in my bios in advance > Hardware Monitor but I cannot find it. But anyway, I have cleaned the case and updated the bios. I will post back and let you know how it went. I really will not know until morning.

PS. I will check back and post my results. There is nothing more anoying than reading about a problem that is similar to yours, try many ideas that they say but they never tell you if it resulted into a fix or not.

Today was the first morning after all the work I did on the inside of the box. It was good news. I only pushed the button once and it fired right up. No error message. So the cleaning and the bios update appears to have fixed the issue. I will post back in a few days t verify this.

Its been several mornigs now since I did a complete clean on the inside of the box. All is good. THe PC boots up without a warning sign about the CPU fan. I will post back later if anyuthing else comes up. For now, I recommend cleaning everything inside the box. Take out memory an spray slots. Take out power chord and spray. Clean EVERYTHING you can.
