Pressing CTRL while booting doesn't work

I need to do a few changes, per microsoft's support page, to my registry. My computer will not go into the menu for me to select 'safe mode'. I've tried several times to reboot and hold the CTRL key. I've also tried the Win95 method of holding F8, with same results. I couldn't find anything on microsoft's support page and knowledge base to help me out. I'm using Win 98SE and I keep up to date with Windows updates. I tried to reinstall Windows to see if that would fix the problem, but it didn't. In fact I had a couple extra problems from doing that, but I repaired those. I just can't seem to get into safe mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

 

one thing to try...boot to normal mode, click Start --> Run...type msconfig...hit Enter...click Startup...and I believe there is an Advanced button. If there is, click it, and you'll have an option that says Enable Bootup Menu or something to that effect. Put a check mark in it, and Click OK. now reboot. you'll get the bootup options, with #3 being Safe Mode.

 

Ace, no Advanced settings under Startup in 98SE. Under General there is Advanced and one of the boxes is Enable Startup Menu. Is that the one your thinking of?

Also, on a 98SE that I have sometimes to get into safe mode you had to tap the F8 off and on instead of holding it down, don't know why. If none of these suggestions work for you, what are the " few changes " you need to make? Maybe we can help there.

Still no joy. The 'Enable Start up Menu' was already selected, and I still can't get it to work. I'm putting up a new post for my other problem. Thanks.

 

Tapping F8 a couple of times at bootup gets me into the bootup options, including safe mode. Works on my W98SE laptop. Bazza
