I have two young girls in my house and sister about their age that visits, the

sister had downloaded wallpaper along with the w32/IRCbot virus and it took me

about an hour to get rid of it. They dont use email yet only myspace (hopefully

no viruses there yet) but they can still go to sites and download *pretty*

wallpapers and cause me alot of grief. User accounts dont work well on my

network for some reason (i have 3 computers and one laptop sharing files) the

internet basically doesnt work on user accounts. Any ideas on how to get user

accounts to access the internet(ive tried admin and limited to no avail) and i

could use some custom options on tailoring the account for them.

@@Moderator how about moving this to the networking forum?@@

You really need to give us some details of the nework and the kit connected.

You should be able to create a limited logon for every user. Including youself for normal non administrative use.

If you using XP home have you tried making the Network setup floppy and running it on all the pcs concerned?

I am logging off for th night but there are several american experts who look at the networking forum who should be able to help, once they have the info.

I only read quickly and not thoroughly:

Set each user up with a window logon and password

This allows you to sensor their access and controll downloading

Set a default IE and set the IE user options/locks and controll downloading

Be sure that you have their passwords and make them change the passwords at least monthly. NOTE: they should create 12 seven character passwords using 2 Capitol letters, 2 lower case letters, 2 numbers and 1 symbol.

Wallpapers for their logon windows desktop should only come from trusted sites - try sitting with each one under your log in and downloading several papers they like giving them options to set personal desktops.

If all else fails, duct tape and rope.

My personal solution was a removable hard drive and the CMOS password. When my kid messed up I'd remove his hard drive, much easier than moving the computer. The CMOS password was to protect my computer from the intruders. This may not be practical for you, short of denying them access there isn't much you can do, educate them maybe.

Another thought, a cheap computer that you don't mind blanking now and then, connected to a KVM switch.

In that vein, I'd like to point out MA's nice little guide called Using the internet safely, which has some good points.

Coupled with the advice found in Chaslang's How to protect yourself from malware thread, you should have a pretty decent defense!
