I have a Dell Inspiron 1520. It has Media Direct. I need to know how to prevent Media Direct from overriding Windows Media Player when I want to play a DVD.

I did a Google search and found ways to completely disable it and ways to change what the Media Direct Button does, but I don't need to do this and prefer not to mess around in changing files and directories if I don't have to. I just want to play DVDs in Windows Media player without being overridden by Media Direct.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for the response.

I have attempted to set WMP as my default player, but something is overriding this. When I go into the Control Panel and try to Set Program Access and Defaults, it will not except my changes. I can click on the button that says WMP as default, but when I hit OK, it doesn't register. I tried it about 5 times. I think there is something hidden in there that won't allow the default to be changed and I'm not sure how to find it. Thanks.

Are you logged in under Admin. account?

Not sure if your issue is on all file types or just one type, check the file extension for what program starts.

Or right click file and use "Open With" if you don't want to mess with file extensions.

is your OS Vista, don't think so but just checking

Yes, I am using an admin account.

I had already tried all the normal things like "open with" and just tried the other suggestions in the links you provided. None of that works. I think there has been something programmed into this Media Direct (or somewhere) to disable the Widows Media player and automatically send to Media Direct when a DVD is opened. I think that is why I can't make changes using Add/Remove programs. Even if I go into WMP and try to open the file from there, it sends it to Media Direct. The computer came with another DVD playing program installed and that is an option when I right-click and doesn't revert to Media-Direct, but when I try to right-click WMP is not and option. The problem with playing with names and file extensions is that the DVD I really want to play in WMP is the videos for an online class so it's not the kind of DVD where I can access the files.

I found lots of haters of this feature when searching the internet, but their solutions were always to erase the entire program. I'd rather not do that because I do like some of the feature, I just want to be able to use WMP for certain things where the features on WMP are better.
