I don't follow. there are no other files, just the MPG's. and none are hidden.

    hello
    is anybody there?
    what went wrong?

If you ae in thumbnail view in Windows XP, you have a Thumbs.db file.

Are you certain you are showing hidden files and folders?

You might want to try making a new folder and copying the mpgs into there.

Then see if a thumbs.db file gets created.

Where is the original post that this started in?

Check your XP file associations thread for a fix that just might fix this too.

    Make sense to you Adryn?

  5. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Absolutely. The files have to have associations to be viewed as thumbnails. Didn't even think of that.

Yet, it seems to me a thumbs.db file should still be present....maybe not.

    actually they both make sense.

    Adryn:
There are no hidden files I havent yet looked through my cmd prompt, Ive been having files that arent there hidden or otherwise show up there.
    Alanc:
I did run that batch file, per other thread, that did get some, not that though.

    To both:
Is there a way to do it manually?

You could try to re-register the DLL's used to provide functionality for creating thumbs.db and image-preview.

Press Start-button and Run... these commands:
    Then restart.

Is there an i386 directory on your C: drive?

  18. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

If there is go to regedit and change Sourcepath under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

    to your C:\ drive.

Do not specify i386, its already implied.

  19. jarcher

    I am here:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Don't think people doesn't want to help you, but you are in situation where it is difficult to provide good advice.

I see the following options are available for you:
    - Live without thumbnails
    - Get hold of a XP Install CD from a friend and perform a repair install (Followed by installing all windows updates released since the XP Install CD was made)
    - Make a small prayer to whatever god you believe in and install XP SP2.

  40. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

Also XP have introduced an option capable of disabling the caching of thumbnails

P.S. Eventhough the thumbvw.dll failed to register, did you also try to register shimgvw.dll ? (and while you are at it also try shmedia.dll)

P.S.P.S. After reading the entire thread, I'm a little confused whether it is movie-preview or picture-preview which is causing trouble or both. Could you clarify ?

  41. jarcher

    jarcher I can't handle a title

it was both but it has only been the video thumbs

    p.s
    yea i tried that too

if I can see the img thumbs
    the thumbs haven't been disabled\

    and I have no friends
so I cannot getahold of a install cd. . .
