Before Prevx1 came out, there was just Prevx, with no number. AKA Prevx Generic Intrusion Prevention. I'll call it PGIP to make things easy. Well, PGIP was 100% free, as were the updates and it was an EXCELLENT security app. It didn't scan or remove infections, it stopped them kind of like a firewall where, when some questionable activity took place, you'd be asked how to proceed, and you could create rules for certain apps. This applied to all PC 'traffic', not just internet traffic. Support was discontinued quite some time ago, but updates were still available thru about mid November 2006. Then updates just stopped being available. No warning, nothing. Thinking that maybe PGIP was messed up, I uninstalled it, and re-installed it and lost all the updates in the process 'cuz it turns out that it was running fine. The Prevx people have been of little help regarding PGIP because they now have the Prevx1 which is not free so, naturally, they ignore the older free version. My question is: is anyone out there familiar with the older Prevx and is there another app that provides equal protection in the same way that PGIP did? The only thing that's even close is Arovax Shield or maybe WinPatrol...... any input at all will be appreciated!

Hi hopperdave2000. I am running Winpatrol and Prevx1. I did not know about Prevx1 until recently so I have no knowledge of the earlier version. What attracted me was the fact that the protection is free - until you get an infection. It seems that you only pay up if you want to clean up the old machine. I have actually spent the money upfront. I reckoned that if I get a problem which seizes up the pc I might not be able to access Prevx1 to pay for the cleanup. Winpatrol is good enough but, again, to access the full benefits of the database you gotta pay. Personally I don't really object to paying for someone else's development but I do understand the irritation of having a free programme whipped away from under your feet. That happened to me with "jv16 powertools".

Prevx2 was released yesterday. As with Prevx1, you don't have to use the "ABC" mode, you can still use the old "in your face" expert mode if you choose. Also the program is still free for the first infection.

Thanks Biscuity. I shall look at that now.
