Print Failure When Opening Internet Explorer From Edge

It has been a very long time since I have needed the help of MajorGeeks so please bear with me if I am doing something wrong.

I have Microsoft Edge running on two different Windows 10 computers (a laptop and desktop). As far as I can tell both are up to date. As all of you know the print options are limited in Edge. In this case I am speaking of printing between everything on a webpage vs a selected part and the scale options.

When I am on certain websites (webpages) and want to just print a selected part of a webpage and want to use a scale option not available in Edge, I go to more items (…) in the upper right corner of Edge, click, then go to More Tools then Open with Internet Explorer. I can click the Settings cog in the upper right corner of Internet Explorer, click Print then Print Preview. From this page I can tell Print to just print a selected part of the webpage and have many more scale options than what is available than using the Print function in Edge.

I can still perform this operation with no problem using my desktop but starting a few days ago using my laptop I started getting a failure as soon as I click on Print Preview with the following message - A problem with this webpage caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing my problem? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks Eldon. But I am having a problem still. I downloaded and installed "print friendly". It added a little green icon to the left of settings (…) on my Edge browser. But I am having a problem using it. For example: I open a tab and go to a website "survivorgrid.com". When it is displayed I click on the green icon and nothing but the very top and very bottom of the webpage is displayed. The actual grid that I want to print is not displayed. I am sure it is a user error but can't figure it out.

A follow up and addition to the comment above. I went to another website that had two columns of data with each column having 6 groups of 16 lines of data. When I clicked on the Print Friendly icon the data was very distorted.
Usually when I used the Internet Explorer Print function I simply changed the scale (used anywhere from 80% to 90%) to get my desired print - Edge only gives you 100% and if you want less you have to drop to 75%.

So it appears Print Friendly is not an option for me. I am now back to needing to be able to open my webpage in Internet Explorer and using that print function.

Honestly I would suggest moving away from Edge since Microsoft is letting it slowly die in favor of the newly built Chromium based Microsoft Edge. It's still beta but pretty stable and you can install addons from the Chrome web store. Microsoft Edge Stable.

Edge was never a complete browser and since they are killing it I would suspect that it will never get any better and possibly even worse over time.

So are you suggesting I move to Microsoft Edge Stable? Do you think this is a better Edge or the Chromium Edge? Is this a totally different Edge browser which will allow me to perform the type of printing I desire? And, will it keep my old Edge browser so I can transfer all my bookmarks (favorites) and other items on my current Edge?

Sorry for all the questions but I don't want to get into more problems than I currently have. At least now I can go to my other PC and perform the Print functions I desire in Internet Explorer.

Yes. If not to the new Edge Stable then to another browser that is stable like Firefox or Google Chrome.

Edge is being abandoned. No sense in trying to make it work when MS is putting their time and money into a new browser. Edge is or soon will be abandoned on the development side. It may get security updates but that's probably all.

Totally new built on Chromium. I don't do much printing but there are various print addons in the Chrome web store.

I don't think you can uninstall Edge. It will probably be removed by Windows update sometime in the distant future. During the install process there is an option to import bookmarks and settings but you will still need to do a little work to get everything sorted the way you are comfortable with. You are pretty much setting up a new browser.

IE should be on every Windows computer. You can find it in the start menu under Windows Accessories.

Evil, I installed Edge Stable. I now can't find the old Edge but it shouldn't matter since it appears I have everything transferred to Edge Stable. Edge Stable does not have anything under Settings (...), More Tools to open Internet Explorer - that I can find. But that does not appear to be a problem right now, since it appears that Edge Stable has implemented the print options I needed from the Internet Explorer Print function.

I am having some problems like not being able to print background colors and I still need to slightly adjust other print settings. Also in Edge Stable all of my favorites are in a toolbar between the line that contains the URL of the webpage I am viewing and the contents of that webpage. I prefer the old Edge where I open a tab and click on the favorites icon (that was to the right of the webpage URL and left of the Settings (...) for a drop down menu of all my favorites -- hopefully I can find a way to move the favorites from the favorites bar to that drop down menu.

Thanks for your help. If I run into more problems related to this thread I will add them.

That's strange. It should be in your software list as Microsoft Edge.

Sorry I mean it is found in the Windows Start menu software list under Windows Accessories.

Yea Favorites are always a PITA for me too when importing. They just get lumped together instead of how they were on the previous browser. You can manage bookmarks easier, including drag and drop, by typing edge://favorites and hit Enter in the address bar.

Just as a follow up. The only Microsoft Edge listed in the software list is listed as "new" and is the one I just installed. Anyone reading this thread just should be sure to copy everything over when they load Stable Edge which is very easy.

You are correct -- Internet Explorer is located in Windows Accessories (but hopefully it will not be needed now).

I'll checkout edge://favorites to see if I can setup my favorites like I want them.

Lastly, I have been able to make my adjustments to the Stable Edge print function so all is well there.

It appears everything is a-ok now so we can close out this thread. I hope it can be of help to others if they run into similar problems.

Have a good day and thanks again.

That's strange. I didn't think installing the new browser would remove Edge. I'm pretty sure you can install it from the Microsoft Store app. All of the app data is probably still on the computer. I it hasn't been uninstalled the store will tell you it is still installed. Just type edge in the search bar and hit Enter.
