printer, dvd drives not detected after vista reinstall

Hello all, hope you can help,
I did a clean reinstall of Vista Ultimate and now the dvd drves (2) dont't show up on My Computer tab, discs don't work when inserted.
Also after the reinstall, the printer is not detected. The USB port works when I plug in a memory stick, so it's not the USB port or driver. But when I plug the printer in I get the sound notification that something was plugged in but no "windows has detected new hardware" or something similiar. I have tried downloading drivers from the net as I can't use installation disc but that doesn't help. The problem seems to me to be a windows problem as the printer works in other computers.
Can't find anything from MS or the web, really need some help.
