Win 7 Home Premium (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601.24106)
    Firefox 59.0.3
Printer: HP 5740 (loaded from disc) WiFi connect

Few weeks ago printer malfunctioned, would not print, (print jobs iust backlogged)
Had to delete printer, and all pending print tasks
Reloaded printer from factory disc and updated from HP web site
    Set printer to default

    Successful reload, printed several tasks
Printer sat idle about a week. Yesterday tried to print an email using "Ctrl P", unsuccessfully. Printer unresponsive. Tried cuing from print icon in Outlook, same results.

    WTF is going on?
    Appreciate any help

I tend to 'plug and play' accessories and don't usually use the manufacturers disc.
Obviously if some actions don't work (very unusual) I would try the disc!

PS. Updating drivers often seems to create problems when there wasn't a problem to start with!

When something is stuck in the queue, nothing will print.

Your mistake was removing the printer. You simply remove the items in the queue.
    1. Go into services and stop the print spooler service that is running
    2. Delete all the print jobs in the queue
    3. Restart the print spooler service

Since that is a lot of work, locating the service, stopping it, finding the print jobs, removing them and then restarting the service. I found a little program that does this with a click. (We have one printer that never cleans up after itself. There was always a mess of things remaining even after they were printed. Since the printer is attached to my husband's computer, I'd have to keep running down to the basement, clear the mess and then he could print).

I put this shortcut on his desktop: Print Flush
    https://bradkovach.com/printflush/printflush-1-3/

I was so happy with it, I sent the guy money for this small program.

My husband right clicks it and runs it as an administrator before he starts printing anything. Problem solved.

One last thing to check, is the wifi on? I've installed a wifi printer and my husband tried to print. Nothing happened. I had a look and the wifi wasn't on. I turned it on and his job printed.

I got back around to try working on this, when the magic printer genie said prestidigimo (or something like that) and the printer is back working. I did nothing to it, did not add or delete anything.
Decided to lave well enough alone

Perhaps the wifi wasn't on. It happens and I don't know why.

If it does this again, and I am sure it will, I'll check the wifi also.
    Tnx

Well, it did it again. WiFi was connected, checked that..
When I tell the system I want to print, it goes to a job I did last year during the elections and prints that, regardless of what I want to print. There is no way I would have set up a print job that large.

    PRINT FLUSH 1.3
Fix your printer with this small utility!

Has your printer quit working? Did you try to cancel a job and it broke the printer completely? I always do that. And the method to fix it usually involves rebooting, restarting the print spooler, trashing junk print files, and sometimes even more. Not anymore.

“My printer stopped working in January – and anytime I needed to print something I had to drive to the UPS store… but Print Flush worked – this sounds like a cheezy commercial but thanks.” (Tamara, September 2007)
Introducing my lean-and-mean print spooler cleaner! It’s a simple batch file that takes all the steps necessary to unjam a printer queue and puts them at a double-click of the mouse.

Print Flush has a simple function: clean the print spool. If your printer’s driver is incorrectly installed, Print Flush cannot help you. If you have used your printer before and it worked fine then, but it doesn’t now, Print Flush can probably help you.

It will work with Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8!

    Download Print Flush 1.3

    Directions
    1. Save somewhere where you can find it.
    2. If you downloaded the zipped version… Unzip the file to the desktop or something
    3. Based on your operating system…
      1. Windows XP and before can simply double click to run Print Flush
      2. Windows Vista, 7, 8 users: right click and “Run As Administrator”
    4. Try printing again!
Did Print Flush work well for you?
