Product Name: HP Deskjet 3054, J610 series
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
Laptop: HP Envy Touchsmart Sleekbook model: m6-k125dx

I am receiving an error message when plugging in the HP Deskjet 3054, j610 series USB printer cable to my laptop. I have tried connecting to my HP Envy Touchsmart sleekbook running windows 8.1 as well as my HP Z420 workstation running windows 7.

The USB cable is connected directly from printer to PC.

error message: usb device not recognized, The last usb device you connected to this malfunctioned and windows could not recognize it.

    I tried the following:

    - re-booting and unplugging units
    - using a different USB cable
    - plugging into a desktop instead of laptop

    Any help would be appreciated.

I have manually installed the printer driver as I prefer not to use eprint. (DJ3050_J610_1315-1.exe)

Reading the setup it says, do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so.
The set up guide has directions for printing a test page all before connecting it to a computer.
One of the last things to do is run the CD then connect the USB cord when told to do so.

Since three different computers fail to recognize the printer, I suspect you connected the USB cord too early in the setup process.

I got the setup guide and user guide from here

    Thank you for your help.
    update:
I just followed the instructions in order from the set-up guide and connected the USB cable at the time indicated by the software. I received the same results and error message.

fyi: I validated and hit "ok" for the language and region; however, there was no alignment page printed. (This printer was used before and setup had been completed in the past.)

Was this printer used by you or do you buy it used?

If you now followed the guide which you didn't do earlier, you might have a corrupted install preventing it from working. You might have to go in and search for all the HP folders and remove them.

If you never got this printer to work on your three computers and it is used, then I suspect something is wrong with the printer.

Do you hear the familiar chime when you connect the printer to either your desktop or laptop?

No, could mean a bad USB Port - try another.

Yes, means your computer and printer are talking to each other but does not eliminate possible printer problems.

Some printers have a "hard reset" which my be internal or else a keyboard combination at your computer.

    plodr,
The printer originally belonged to my son.
I, too, wondered about corruption and de-installed the software within microsoft "programs and features" as well as removed printer from devices.
I then re-installed it with no better results.

    Don,
I hear the chime but a window pops up with the error message I mentioned before. I did try all 3 ports with the same result. Any advice how to do a "hard reset"? I was only able to find out how to reset my power supply.

    Thanks.

Unfortunately those two things do not remove everything. There are still things left behind, probably in the registry.

Try CCleaner portable. That means it doesn't get installed. You can keep it in a folder on your computer desktop or on a USB stick.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/ccleaner_portable.html
Run the registry part and look for anything that has HP in the name (If you have an HP computer, be careful). Those are the items to keep checked for removal.
When it asks if you want to backup the registry before you clean, say YES! It will put a file with the .reg in the folder with 2015 followed by the month and day. If anything breaks, you simply click on that .reg file and everything is returned to the registry just like it was never cleaned.

After you clean off the HP printer items, reboot and see if you can install the printer, using the CD (we can remove the extra software later) and then attaching the USB cable when the wizard tells you to.

    Somemelvin1,

You might try this. I don't think it could hurt anything.

If the printer has a hard reset" function, it's usually something like holding a switch down for X seconds. I couldn't find a manual on-line but I quit Googling when I saw this:

If this doesn't work, try to find the manual for your model then look for "Hard Reset" or similar.

got it working. here's what I did.

    shut off printer.

    shut off router.

    turn on router.

    turn on printer.

    turn off airport.

    turn on airport.

reset the printer system and it's now working.

Don, it is not a networked printer.
So turning a router on and off would not have any effect on a local printer.
