Printer / Scanner Works Fine With Another Computer But Will Only Scan But Not Print With My Computer

My printer is an HP ENVY 5530. It’s an all-in-one printer / scanner / copier / fax machine.

When connected to MY FRIEND’s computer — whether wirelessly or by a wired connection — it works perfectly, even though he didn’t install HP’s printer driver, but instead just used the Windows built-in driver.

But connected to MY computer — whether wirelessly or by a wired connection, and whether using Windows’ built-in driver or HP’s driver — it works perfectly AS A SCANNER, but doesn’t work AT ALL as a printer.

When connected to my computer, 6 printers are listed in Devices and Printers:
    • Fax
    • HP ENVY 5530 series <-- This is a wired connection.
    • HP727FFA (HP ENVY 5530 series) <-- This is a wireless connection.
    • Microsoft Print to PDF
    • Microsoft XPS Document Writer
    • Send To OneNote 2016

None of these are set as the default printer.

When I try to print any document, the two HP ENVY 5530 printers are the only ones that are NOT listed under “Select Printer” in the Print window.

And when I right-click on the icon for each of these printers in Devices and Printers, the two HP ENVY 5530 printers are the only ones whose pop-up menu does NOT include:
    • Set as default printer
    • Printing preferences
    • Printer properties

What DOES appear in the pop-up menu for the two HP ENVY 5530 printers are:
    • Start scan
    • Scan profiles
    • Scan properties

All 3 scan functions work. And I CAN save my scans to my computer.

What could be preventing me from my printer as the default printer?

My Windows user account has full Administrator privileges, so it can’t be that I don’t have sufficient privileges.

I wondered if any of my security programs could be preventing me from setting my printer as the default printer.

But the only security program with real-time protection that I’m running is Avira Antivirus Pro. And I even tried disabling it, but “Set as default printer” still didn’t appear in my printer’s pop-up menu in Devices and Printers.

I regularly do manually-initiated scans of my hard drive with Avira, as well as with Advanced SystemCare, Wise Care 365, and Glary Utilities, but since none of those scans involve real-time protection, I don’t see how any of those programs could be interfering with my ability to set my printer as the default printer.

    I’m mystified.

    Any ideas?

Just an FYI on something I tried:

I learned that if the Print Spooler is turned off, it isn’t possible to print, or for the computer to see printers connected to it.

I also learned that if a computer print or can’t see its printer(s), it may be possible to rectify the problem by going into Task Manager > Services > Print Spooler, making sure the Print Spooler’s Startup type is set to Automatic and its Service status is set to Running, and then stopping and restarting the Print Spooler, and then rebooting the computer.

So I tried this, but it didn’t work.

BTW, here are some of the printer’s properties:
    • install state = 00000000 (I don’t know what that means.)
    • is present = true
    • is connected = true
    • has problem = false
    • is reboot required = false

    • status =
    0180200A
    DN_DRIVER_LOADED
    DN_STARTED
    DN_DISABLEABLE
    DN_NT_ENUMERATOR
    DN_NT_DRIVER

So it looks like the driver is loaded and started, but I don’t know what the rest of this means.

    My printer problem is solved!

By establishing a wireless connection and then adding a printer via Start > Settings > Add Printer or Scanner, I was able to add my printer using its IP address, and then make it my default printer.

    Hallelujah!
