My printer is set to sharing with my laptop, but first I have to turn off the firewall on the desktop for it to work. How can I fix that?

What operating sytem and what firewall? In general, a firewall you downloaded is in the try and you can right click and disable it. Start, Control Panel, Security to shut off Windows Firewall.

You need to find out what port the printer is on and allow it. I don't know Sygate very well, so may not be of much more help.
