Lately my computer is freezing up after printing to my new HP 2280 inkket that has lot of memory on board?

I forget the fault but it is " Spool" error message. Any one have an idea about this?

Should I spool directly to the printer and bypass Win98se ?

Never come across a problem like this. Is the printer software working? I mean, does the printer software start before the computers locks? Does a test page work from inside the software? Is the problem general, or only when printing from, say, Word?

All these questions! Not helping much am I?!

Stick another post in and I'll ty to help a little more. Win98 is usually fairly good with printers, and the model you have is a deent one, so there should be no problems. Are you on a network at all? (more questions!)

    See ya soon ...

typically when I get problems coming in about spool errors I uninstall the drivers/software for the printer, reboot and reinstall.

The error is: " Spool32 caused invalid page fault in module...stack dump..." I am usually in MS Word while my browers is open etc and then I print a Word Doc it then Prints fine and my machine freezes and Cnt Atl Del does nothing so I must press the reset button and hard re-boot!! S&*T what a pain. Now, I am using a longer lenght printer cable than is recommeded by HP but so what. I am going to bypass the Win 98se Spool and print directly to the printer and see if that helps.

make sure you have the latest drivers for your printer.

OK, so Hellboy is the drill to rename the Windows 98se "old_spoolss.dll " then move the new spools.dll into the Windows\Systems directory? I downloaded it into My Documents so far. I am guessing I would need to reboot so the new file is in place. Right?

Thanks, I will wait for your input.

Go to your machine. Save everything you need to a USB drive or CD rom.

Then goto the store, buy XP.

And format that p.o.s. Operation System to hell.

Solves all your 98 prollems :D

If you put the new .dll file in the system directory (or where ever the old one was) and reboot then that will use the new file. That may work, as ME did cure some bizarre errors, whilst making its own more serious ones!

Have you been to the manufacturer's website and got the latest drivers?

Does you printer appear correctly in the Control Panel? Can it print a test page, for example?

    We'll get there ......

What doe this have to do with HP drivers if Win98 is failing?

It may be a fault with the installed drivers causing Win98 to fail. If you think its the OS, reinstall that ! Thats a little more drastic than looking for new drivers though. ;-)

How long is your printer cable? LPT and video cables DO have maximum limits, and the signals degrade when you exceed the recommended limits. And does it meet the IEEE 1284 spec? If not, THAT can screw up modern printers. Try a short proper cable if the software tweaks don't help..
