Hello I just got two computers One I have hooked up and tried to start for my family. Anyways its a HP windows 2000 professional. I come to the login screen for the login and password. And I don't know it. Anyway to get around it? I ve tried a few login names and passwords they got on the monitor but nothing. This computer was donated to mother from a business friend, and no disk with it.

Well without a username you could try logging in as Administrator. Then if needed use Ophcrack to crack the password. You could always take the drive out, plug it into another computer and see what username folders are in Docs n Settings.

Remember I am total newbie and don't know how to do that. How do I go into admin account? Thought maybe going through f8 or whatever at start could get me pass something, or maybe chancing settings to factory, or chancing something in bios to where it disables it when startinging. I dont know I am new on it.

@domluc It's Windows 2000. There's no welcome screen to "choose".

@silas Type Administrator for the username. See if they left it open without a password. No need to go into safe mode.

But I agree with DomLuc, Why not ask for the username/password?

Also, I didn't think of this before but normally Windows 2000 remembers the last username. Are you sure it didn't have the username field pre-populated?

I dont have the computer here. Its at her house, so I am writting on these suggestions for when I go back. So anymore suggestions be good. Also I tried safe mode and thats about it. And the donor was a guy that just came up for 1 day visit due to someone dieing. And he wont be back. And the computer did have some log on names and passwords but none worked.

If it was a business friend like you said, she should have a contact number to get the info needed.

I tried safe mode and it came to login name and password. Also the computer was donated by a guy that works there. They throw these computers away in the trash and he took them out and donated to all librarys in his town plus few other places, they finally said stop bringing all of them. Anyways now they just take them to his office room, and he don't know the login names or password. Its people that work in other offices. So Any other way to sneak pass? What exactly do I need to do with tring as admin? Login name - Admin or Administrator ? Password?- Password? what?

This HP computer did come up with a login name already on the computer. But The 3 accounts and password stickers on the screen isn't a match. And Ive tried there passwords for it to and nothing.

If he can gain access with that, he can delete the other accounts and basically have a clean slate.

The easiest solution may be to make and use the below CD to blank out the password for the Administrator (and any other accounts that show). Do not try to change the passwords using this. Just blank them out.

Thanks. I just tested that in a VM. Works better than Ophcrack.

Burned to a CD or put on a floppy depending on which version you want. Then boot to the CD or floppy. You may need to change the BIOS order or press a key to during POST to show a boot menu.

What should I do if I am not able to get into the computer? I don't want to pay for it to try to have it cracked into by someone they charge to much here. Thinking what if If I mess up on the making the disk part, can I buy a normal burnable cd like you burn music on? Or what?

    Floppies are lots easier.

I havn't used a floppy in over 10 years. So been long time, I was thinking when you said floppy(I was thinking of those old huge ones like 6 inches wide). Anyways I now know the small ones. But why would floppy be easier? How do I put that thing onto a floppy? Just save to destop then save to floppy, then insert into other computer then start it up and boom it works(Probably not)?

The website has the instructions on how to make the floppy. They are special instructions so follow them closely.

I think I got no floppy place or a burnable dvd player in my computer to burn that stuff off that site. :(

Then your only solution is to buy an operating system, format the drive and install it.

I have no idea what the specs are on the windows 2000 professional on a HP computer is.. But do you think I could install windows xp thats on my dell atm?

I don't believe that is possible.Dell includes lots of things that are exclusively for Dell machines.
Will most likely need to get a new disk, either retail or OEM.
