Right now my laptop is connecting to whomever seems to be around me at the time. It's of course not reliable at all. However when I hook up our Belkin Router, I have great internet - but it knocks out the internet on the desktop that holds the router.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need an updated or special router?

Let's get a clarification please on your setup. Makes it much easier to try to help with your question.

From the Internet, you have ? (DSL/cable modem)
From that device, you are connected to a router?
From the router, you connect your wireless device?

When you say that the desktop that holds the router? What do you mean by that? Is the router a separate hardware device or are you running your connections through a desktop with is configured as a router with 2 network adapters?

    Please clarify your setup.

    Thanks,
    Mav
