I cannot find the post new thread button so I am posting here, please don't be upset with me.

    Hello,

lastnight I installed some updates from the HP website. All seemed well /or/ the same (no improvements) I had been looking for some drivers (usb) to no avail or so it seemed.

I did the usual, went to sleep watching a movie and woke to my computer hibernating.

Since then I am afraid I cannot do much with it anymore. I tried repair disk and it does nothing.

I get the first blue screen, click esc for start uyp, get the black startup screen with no choices for me to select. I can get it to say: setup or diagnostics etc depending on which F key I tap but that is all.

    Can you please help me?

    Sincerely, HP Pavillion slimline s5 1060 - W7

    Thank you LauraR
Sad to say, I cannot get past the bios?? screen.
Disks don't respond either. If I could remember how to get in DOS I just might reformat. ;)
(I woke up to this after upgrading?? from HP's site just lastnight and also waiting to hear from them)
    I am worried now too.
still looking for that new thread button. lol

OH! is there a way for me to get to System Restore like this?

Do you have a Windows 7 Repair Disk or other bootable CD? I know you said that "disks don't respond" but I'm not quite sure what that means and I'm not sure you've tried a bootable disk. Getting hold of a repair disk would really help. Borrow one from a friend or create one using a friend's Win 7 computer. You can create one via the Backup and Restore applet in Control Panel.

Start Button > Control Panel > Backup and Restore > Create a system restore disk

Make sure that your optical drive is listed before your hard drive in the BIOS screen (it should be, by default).

Hi Rusty. What I meant by no response is nothing happens.
    I have w7 os 64 bit disk
also a 4 pack of reinstallation disks
    repair disks
not sure but I think it is bootable?
Can I get or make or download a bootable disk while using XP??
I can however click different F keys and get diagnostics, setup etc depending on what F key I press, but can't get any further.
do you know anything about ubuntu? I read you can boot into windows with it?
the system repair disks, i made myself from my computer.

*you might have to specify that your computer uses its DVD drive or a USB flash drive as the first startup device. To do this, you need to change settings in the computer's basic input/output system (BIOS). <===> how can I do this ??

Great, you have a Repair Disk!

    1. Put the repair disk in your CD/DVD drive
    2. Reboot the computer. You may be prompted to "Press any key to boot from CD". If so, hit any key. The computer should boot into the Windows Recovery Environment. This will bring up the System Recovery Options window.
    3. Select a keyboard input language, then hit "Next" button
    4. Select the radio button next to "Use recovery tools..."
    5. Select an OS (should be Windows 7 unless you're set up to dual boot)
    6. Click on "Next" button
    7. When the System Recovery Option window appears, click on the first item on the list: "Startup Repairs", then follow the prompts.
This will fix many of the common causes of failure to boot Windows. When finished, take the repair disk out of the drive and reboot.

If that doesn't work, then once again follow the above steps 1 through 6, then click on "System Restore" item and follow the prompts. This will restore your system files from the last system restore that was done (assuming you had system restore enabled - it's turned on by default).

To my knowledge, you cannot download a Windows 7 Repair Disk (using XP or any other OS).

Ubuntu does include a lot of Linux tools that can be used to address boot problems but I've never heard of any way to boot Windows from Ubuntu.

I have been reading a lot online today and tonight. What I did not realize till a bit ago is BIOS is not recognizing my HD. Yup it isn't in the list. They say you can reset your bios. Tap f10 to get the bios screen then f5 to reset then f10 again to save. Well the f5 part does nothing for me. So w/o a HD in bios there will be no help from a recovery /boot disk. Explains why no disks are responding. lol
I do appreciate all the time and effort that you are giving me, it means a lot really. That is all I can remember right now, I have a serious headache.

BIOS not seeing your HDD is a bad sign. Your drive is probably toast. In any case, you don't need a hard drive to boot up a CD in your optical drive. That's the whole point of a bootable CD.

Go ahead and give the Repair Disk a shot. Follow the steps I outlined earlier and see what happens.

About the bios, I think it needs to be reset. It isn't showing my optical drive as well as my HDD. I did before noticing this, put in a different HDD and it didn't show up either. There could be other items not showing in the bios as well, if I knew more about PC's I might see that right away.
I did try your suggestion and it was the same as always. Nothing new as if I hadn't done anything at all.
While I am in the bios screen, I feel there are certain key combo's that might get me further towards my goal. HP wants money for even a suggestion when their updates put me in this bad place. I remember one of them said it was for the bios.
    Again I thank you :major

Hi Just in case you have not located this yet, at the top left hand corner of each forum topic so Software, Hardware, Malware etc is a New Topic button, just click that and format your post, some more info HERE and more forum help HERE

Before trying the entering the BIOS can you get to safe mode (tap F8 at boot and choose safe mode with networking).. worth a shot as fixing any bad updates would be easier.

Sadly I'm not in work to find a HP desktop in the dept. to look at as I'm not familiar with the layout of HP BIOS menu, as I have a custom desktop at home and my work PC is a dell. So you enter the BIOS and look through the menus for Reset or Load Default and let us know if you have anything like those.

Next in the BIOS look for the Boot options and make sure the CD/DVD is the 1st boot device and if not make it 1st boot device and remove all others if any listed, then save and exit, but with the Repair Disk in the drive and then see if you can follow rustys post above to get the startup repair options.

    EXCITED! :p:celebrate:zzz
I did the remove the battery thing and guess what?? I have windows booted YAY! But my fan or one of them seems to be running louder, and maybe faster? than usual?

you said: (tap F8 at boot and choose safe mode with networking)

this type thing were never an option for me
the F keys do the following.
    F1 nothing
    F2 diagnostics
    F3 - F8 nothing
    F9 boot menu
    F10 setup
    F11 system recovery
    F12 net boot

these come up in LR corner of screen, problem is that's all, I had no options once tapping one?
I am thinking I will leave the optical drive as first choice in boot order once I get it changed. Plus look for those &*%#&Y# updates and get rid of them?

    still tho', the fan? :):confused

Well, glad to see that I was wrong about your hard drive.:)

I have a HP computer and my bootup Function keys are mapped completely different from your layout. Why HP changes this keyboard layout for different models is a mystery.

Given that your system seemed to behave normally immediately following the installation of the HP updates, I'm not convinced that they caused whatever it is that happened to your system later on. If you currently notice no ill effects from the updates then there's really no reason to uninstall them (if uninstalling them is even possible).

I think it's a good idea to place your optical drive in the first position in BIOS so that you have no difficulty booting from CD if things go awry with your HD or OS in the future.

I'm not sure what to say about the fan. You might want to download an app like HDDScan that can give you S.M.A.R.T. attributes and temps for your HDD(s), just to make sure that there's nothing seriously wrong with the system drive.

    Hi

Ok good your PC now boots as the BIOS update or update if corrupt would have likely not allowed the PC to boot at all, have seen an update needed a BIOS reset before but rare.

Now for the fan, well if the BIOS is reset some of the environmental controls will be reset to factory default, and not custom settings (some custom setting can come out of the factory also, but will be reset). Without knowing the menu listings in the BIOS I'm guessing but look for a Power menu and then a thermal setting for fans and adjust.

Make sure the PC case fans are clean from dust, and check this out http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...c=en&product=5097984&tmp_track_link=ot_search
