Problem and no clue how to fix it

So my computer is connected to the network for internet and recieves it just fine, but the problem is that none of the programs on my computer that require the internet are able to access it. I have run Ad-Aware, and McAfee Virus scan and nothing. When I was still at home my dad said that it could PING (i don't know what exactly that means) but yea, if anoyone could give me some advice and help me out that would be amazing. Thank you

First,we need some more info. What operating system are you using and how are you connected to the network? Do you have a software firewall installed? Could you download the latest Ad-Aware or McAfee definitions before scanning?

 

I am on Windows XP. I am connected currently through the school network using an ethernet cable. I had the net tech guy come and look at it and he installed the newest ad-aware and mcafee and ran those and cleaned it up and whatnot, but i think he misunderstood the problem. Any other questions just ask. Thank You

 

You need to get back to the techs there at school.
Sometimes they have their own security stuff they have you install to access the school network. My daughter had the same problem and it took 3 levels of tech to get it straightened out. Make sure you explain exactly what the problem is. You supply the computer but they supply the access to the network.

yea I plan on doing that but it's not just the school's network. I had the same problem when I was at home

 

does anyone think that re-installing windows might fix it?
