Win XP Home SP3 - when I open "My Computer" and then go to browse thru a hard drive (this PC has drive C: and drive D: ), I get the dreaded "what program do you want to open with?" message, and there's a bi long list of apps. I have tried using several association fixing tools (like the stuff at the famous Doug Knox site and FileAssociationFixer even though it says it's for Win7/Vista). I have gone in to Tools > Folder Options > File Types and made changes there. So far, nothing has worked. If I right click on a hard drive and select "Open" or "Explore", everything works fine. Double-clicking on the CD drives works fine; it is only double-clicking on the hard drives that is messed up. Something else that's weird and probably related to this issue: if I right click a hard drive and select "Properties", I get TWO tabs for "General"; one is the normal info you'd get on any PC, the other "General" tab brings up the info for "My Documents". Screen shots are attached below.... Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated!! Thanks!

(the last screen shot is from a "Normal" system to illustrate what it should look like)

I have another screen shot to add from "Tools > Folder Options > File Types > Drives". When I saw this erroneous entry, I searched the registry for it and removed it every place I found it (there were 3 different locations and I exported the keys for safety before deleting). It made no difference - I still get the "what do you want to open this with?" message, and still using the ol' right-click-select-open works fine. However, the strange "@shell" key is no longer listed in the "File Types > Drive" entries. And, yes, I have restarted the PC numerous times in-between making changes to see if that would make any difference. . . . it hasn't!

:dood :celebrate Problem solved! Each of the hard drives had a hidden "autorun.inf" file that was leftover from a virus infection. Apparently these autoruns weren't detected as evil files. I open the autoruns in Notepad, and they both pointed to a file called "Se81.exe" which reeks of malware, but an in-depth search of both hard drives and the registry came up empty for anything called "Se81.exe". I'm assuming this file was removed by either MalwareBytes or Avira's AntiVir. So I deleted the autoruns, and now all is well.
    :-D
