Problem building a PC

I just built my first PC and I must have messed something up. When the computer starts I get the screen that asks me how I want to start windows (safe mode, normal mode, etc) I chose normal mode and the windows xp logo comes on the screen for about 1/2 a second and then shows an error screen for another half a second (I had to record it then watch it in slow motion to be able to read it) and it says something about checking the hard drive. What I did was take my hard drive from my old pc and put it into this one. Would that cause a problem? I don't know what it is I'm supposed to change in the bios. It seems to look fine to me. When I first started up the pc, what should I have changed in the bios?
I'm lost, and don't want to have to take this to the local store where I'll get drained of about 50-100 bucks.

Also, When the computer first starts the fans run pretty fast and then after the beep noise and when the picture comes up on the screen, they slow down a good amount. Would this be an issue with the psu or is this normal?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

Did you install a new copy of Winders or are you using the one that was on the drive in your old PC?

I had an HP that had an obviously OEM copy of Windows and I had to buy a new copy of XP when I moved the drive over to my homemade PC. Something about OEM regulations and hardware changes. It gave me some similar problems. I was able to install Pro over the existing Home and then change some security settings and retrieve all of my old files (from Windows) without having to reformat.

This may not be your problem... But if that has nothing to do with it, I'd say try a reformat and reinstall of Windows if you can stomach it.

By the way, I used to be a technician at Circuit City (I very rarely did "technician" stuff, I mostly did installation of RAM or software.. It was lame) And when I didn't know stuff, like I wouldn't know this if you brought your PC to Circuit City, I just got on here and asked for help. That is sad, but true. I didn't know a whole hell of a lot about computers, but no one else in the whole store could even install RAM in a computer.

I mean, people go pay $39.99 for spyware removal and all they do is run Ad-Aware and Spybot. Yes, those exact programs. It is really sad.

What is the beep sequence that you are hearing during P.O.S.T. when the computer boots up? Can you get into the Bios settings to change to boot up on CD-Rom so you can do a "Repair" of XP".

Also double check to make sure that all cards are seated, cables that need to be connected (believe or not, people have forgottent to plug in the fan cables, along with turning the heatsink around the wrong direction).

One you do the repair of XP, it should find all new hardware and hopefully work, otherwise you may need to format and reinstall (last resort).

as askantik said, you are going to need to reformat your hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows.

Windows (especially XP) does not deal well with a change in Chipsets when moving to a new motherboard. What you are experiencing is a lot of driver conflicts. It wold be a long and arduous process to work with, and you'll see better results on a fresh reformat anyway.
