    Problem: Can't acquire network address.

Have a computer that can't seem to connect to the internet. It's connected directly to a SURFboard cable modem. I know the cable works fine because I have another computer that works and connects to the internet without a problem. The computer is a Compaq using XP. No router, no hub, connected directly. Network card is good but can't ping yahoo.com

I have checked to make sure all services are running, ex. DHCP Client, DNS Client, etc and they are all turned on. (maybe I am missing something?)

Have tried ipconfig /release and /renew and I get a response back saying "dhcp server is unreachable".

I also went out and purchased a brand new NIC just to see what would happen. Disabled integrated card, installed new card and still nothing.

I appreciate any help or suggestions I can get with this.

    Thank you!

    Welcome to Major Geeks.
Have you tried a hard reset of the modem?
Pull the power plug for 30 seconds then plug back in. Forces the modem to reset the IP address.

Thank you. Yes I have done that. The modem works fine. I have another computer here that connects to the modem with same cords just fine (Actually the computer I am using now).

Does your modem have both Ethernet and USB connections? If so,try the other.

I tried to use the USB connection as well but that didn't work either.

Did the modem come with a CD with a driver to be installed for USB function? Mine from SuddenLink did.

I am honestly not sure about that. I don't have the cd here. I know the drivers were installed but not sure about the USB. This is a friends computer I am trying to fix and the cd's over there. It doesn't work on their DSL or my cable. I guess I could get the cd and check but it wouldn't really help me much if it's connected via the USB connection on the cable since they have Verizon DSL. The connection once worked through the integrated NIC before but just suddenly stopped working.

You can still check the Device Manager. If anything is needed, download to CD or thumbdrive and then transfer them.
