Ok I am helping a friend out with her computer... it was and still is infested with spyware Chas is helping me out with the spyware portion in the Spyware forum. Multiple Problems Spyware etc.. & DSL Modem
I need some help in getting the computer back to being able to get online thru the modem.

Briefly what happened is that the computer did not have any AV installed so I installed AVG and well it was scanning the computer had so far found 5 viruses/trojans and I had to leave. Well, my friend wanted to know what it would do with the viruses the scan already found so I stopped the scan to show her and that is when we lost connection to the modem.

Currently SBC has her connecting to the net bypassing the modem (thru password and username instead of an always on connection thru the modem) and the modem internet light is not lit.

When I do a Start Run CMD ipconfig/all As for the IPCONFIG/ALL there is no IP Addy or ip subnet mask they are all 0.0.0.0 and the default gateway has nothing just a blank space.

The DHCP and DNS servers show 192.168.0.1

the PPP adapter sbc shows that the DHCP Enabled is NO
then that has IP, subnet mask, Default gateway, DNS servers with numbers .

    NetBIOS over Tcpip is disabled.

But when I go to the network connections and double click on TCP/IP it does say to Obtain Ip automatically and that the DHCP is enabled.

How do I get the computer and modem back online with eachother?

We are willing to "dump" the computer and start fresh if this will take care of the problem. We don't want to dump the computer if this will not take care of the problem. She has had the computer for 4 years has never cleaned it up (defrag, spyware scans, etc.. ) so I can "dump" her computer and start from scratch that isn't a problem but I just don't want this existing problem of having no IP and not being able to connect thru the modem to still be there or even worse if we do "dump" the computer.

I have tried the repair option in network connections and it failed. We have even reset the modem per instructions from SBC and that did not work.

Her computer is WinXP home edition SP1 SBC Yahoo DSL.

Thanks for any help you can give me...

    sw:)

Instead of ipconfig /all, have you tried ipconfig/renew ?

Just wanted to let you know that I ended up having to "dump" the computer so it was back to factory installed state. Her son was messing around and did something or the spyware took over so everything was out of whack when she clicked on one icon it brought up another program. Such as she clicked on Yahoo Messenger Icon and it brought up her AdAware she clicked on AdAware and it brought up Internet Explorer.
When I went over to take another look at her computer and clean up the spyware this came about and she said just dump the darn thing and start fresh..

    Thanks for the help..
    sw:)
