This has been acting the same way ever since I formated my HD over the summer. I didn't think much of it at first but now it's getting annoying. My defragmenter doesn't seem to be fully doing it's job.

Try O & O 6.5 you can download it for a free trial.

This error is because you do not have enough hard drive space left for defrag. If you have another drive try moving your swap file to there and run defrag again.

    Good Luck

This is a support forum, its better if you post the solution here, so others can see.

I'm trying O&O right now, should I defrag by name, accessed, or modified? This is just a home PC that I play games on, listen to music, download things... etc. I'm thinking that it would be best to organize by name but I'm not sure.

I would try by lowering the size of the pagefile, turning off system restore, clearing out all temp internet files, history, etc., running Disk Cleanup, booting into Safe Mode, and running defrag from there. It's a lot easier than trying to find the running process that may be hindering your ability to defrag. Oh, and ditto on using third party app for defragging your computer, Windows built-in kinda sucks and is painfully slow.

Ideally, you would want the most-frequently-used files closest to the file allocation tables to minimize the distance the heads have to travel after they've read the file allocation tables. The best order will depend on the filesystem you're using, the kind of use your system gets, and other factors. There probably isn't an ideal answer.

Why the hell can't I just defrag my whole drive...

As one of the earlier answers suggested, it looks like your hard drive is full, or nearly full.
What is the capacity of your hard drive? How many gigabytes? How much free space is left?

The diagram attachment shows that there is not much free space to enable your defragger to rearrange files. Time for a bigger hard drive, or another hard drive, or radical deletion of stuff. Bazza

I have a 40 gig drive and I have 38% free space. 18% is fragmented. When I'm defragging it gets to 61% then just stops and says it's done. I am confident that the problem isn't free space. O&O suggests 5% free space is enough.

Also, I have deleted a few ISO files, turned off system restore, and lowered my pagefile to try to free some space and it still does the same thing. The program shows that most of the fragmented files are the big files.. around 600 megs. But since I have plenty of space I don't know why that would be a problem.

i use diskeeper .. i like it and have never had a problem like the one you are having since i stopped using the windows defragger ... you might try the boot time defrag option O&O may have that feature I dunno since ive never used it ... or if you have >100MB files try backing them up onto CD then deleting them then defragging your drive to 0 fragments ... then putting those files back ... i have big files ... and i put those onto a seperate partition altogether .. might try putting a partition just for those big files

select defrag/name for your first defrag. this will take a long time the first time your run it.
after that use stealth or defrag/space.

    good luck.
