Problem getting Dell Inspiron to startup

This is an Inspiron 1721 running Vista.

Last week the computer froze up on me and wouldn't restart. I ran the diagnostic and it told me there was a problem with the memory in slot 1. So I took that memory module out and put the one from slot 2 into slot one. The diagnostic didn't show any more problems, but it would seem to try to load forever without getting anywhere (I let it sit an hour or so). I figured it didn't have enough memory to load the OS with the 2nd module taken out, so I ordered some new memory and left it alone.

Today the new memory came in so I installed it and started it up. I get a message about the 'AC power adaptor wattage and type cannot be determined' and it gives me the option to hit F1 to continue, so I do that. The load screen runs and seems to complete pretty quickly, but instead of bringing up the login screen I get a blue screen of death with a message: "STOP: 0x00000078 (0x8c430ba0, 0xc000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)". Startup repair either finds a problem it can't repair (or tell me very much about apparently) or startup repair itself hangs and goes to a blue screen.

    I'm lost, any ideas?

So far I found one thing at aumha on a 78 stop error and it isn't for Vista. The link leads to an msdn article
I'll keep searching to see if I find anything that applies to Vista.

If it is actually a 7B rather than a 78 error, this page on Dell support may help

If it were my laptop, I might try putting the old memory in - the good stick in slot 1 and the suspected stick in slot 2 and at startup, press F8 and select last known good configuration to see if it can boot up windows without a stop error.

I'm not clear if you mixed the new RAM with the old or put in all new RAM. One complication might be that the RAM isn't compatible with your laptop. This would create a problem if you mixed it or just used all new RAM.

I burned a Vista recovery disk this morning and tried it, it boots to the recovery console but when I run startup repair it says a problem has been found that cannot be fixed automatically. System restore says there are no restore points. But if I use the command prompt I can still see the information on the drive. This leads me to think Vista somehow got messed up when the memory failed*. If I can find my Vista DVD I'm thinking of trying to use the command prompt to copy the things I want to save to my 2nd hard drive, then reformatting and reinstalling Vista on the 1st.

*I replaced both memory sticks. Before, when I took the one out of slot 1 (which the diagnostics told me was bad) and put the other in slot one (leaving slot 2 empty) I would not get the blue screen and the computer would run the recovery console without a recovery disk, it would just never finish loading windows. With either the one old stick or the two new ones, the diagnostics don't show a memory error. I never got the blue screen using the one old stick, but I'm thinking that's just because it never loaded to the point where it messes up.

Formatting the drive and reinstalling Vista worked, and I was able to save my old data by using command prompt to transfer it to another drive before format. I guess when my old memory failed it somehow corrupted windows.

I'm glad you sorted it out and you have a working computer with new RAM.
Thanks for letting us know the outcome; this helps others that might have the same problem in the future.
